FUNimation's Parent Company Prepares to Put It On the Auction Block

Don't panic, folks, your DBZ supply isn't going anywhere...yet.

It's no secret that sales of anime and manga are down thanks to the recession, prompting the closure of a handful of publishing houses and distributors. I'm not sure if Minneapolis-based Navarre Corporation never thought there would be lean times when they bought up FUNimation in 2005, but regardless the company began laying the foundation to sell their subsidiary back in May. Now that Navarre has released reports for the first-quarter of the fiscal year listing FUNimation as a "discontinued operation" it seems all but inevitable that its parent company will put it up for sale in the near future.

What does this mean for FUNimation? So far, not a whole heck of a lot. Actually, the company made a tidy profit of over $3 million in the first quarter thanks to strong sales of Dragon Ball Z Kai. While I'm no Gordon Gecko-level businessman, it seems the only way this could go is badly for FUNimation if they're bought out by an interest whose only goal is to liquidate the company's assets by selling off properties, etc.--an idea that seems remote since the company looks poised to expand into the burgeoning sector of online streaming anime.

Whadaya say, folks: if ten thousand of us collectively search our couch cushions for loose change and raid our retirement plans I'm sure we can come up with enough to buy the company out and establish a fan-owned co-op. A man can dream...

I hope that someone good buys them.

that would be the worst, then we will get dakota fanning and other big name stars for dubing "

@FoxxFireArt:  Hm I kinda thought Viz was better, because there more precise.

@secretzfan:
VIZ sucks at everything they do. They censor and edit mangas to ridiculous extents. The only thing they are good at is sucking. They censored the entire Skypiea arc in One Piece(that's 4 volumes worth). They changed Rock Lee's Drunkest Fist technique into the "Loopy Fist". They changed the entire cast of Detective Conan from Japanese to European. They couldn't be further away from "precise".

Also, it's "they're". Not "there".

For some reason, I always seem to have staggeringly low expectations for dubs the first time I watch any anime dubbed, even though I've heard plenty of great dubs. So if the dub is bad, it still meets my expectations, and if it's good, then bonus for me. Either way, I generally prefer watching shows in Japanese with subs anyway.

That said, I'm not as concerned about the dubbing quality (as quite a few others here seem to be) as much as if I'll be able to legitimately own copies of my favorite shows affordably. I'm not saying they should be lazy with their dubs, but that I'm primarily hoping to see more of the complete season sets, instead of those six volumes per season which cost almost as much per volume to buy. In any case, guess we'll see where it goes.
innocencedied2niteon Aug. 5, 2010 at 10:48 a.m.
@hitsusatsu11: No, from the ones I have watched in both sub and dub, I haven't noticed much of a difference. Example, please?
hitsusatsu11on Aug. 5, 2010 at 11:53 a.m.
@innocencedied2nite: Original DBZ. Entire conversations are completely "made up" and do not come from the Japanese. Case in point the dialog when kid buu blows up the earth.
secretzfanon Aug. 5, 2010 at 1:40 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt:  I said Viz was precise not Funi, but they used to censor a lot, but not anymore. The latest Skypiea was pretty uncensored.  They did have a older version that I heard was censored, but face it Funi has gotten better.   DUDE THEY SAVED ONE PIECE FROM THE WRATH OF 4 KIDS!!!
FoxxFireArt moderator on Aug. 5, 2010 at 1:47 p.m.
@secretzfan:
That doesn't excuse VIZ from replacing the word God with Kami in the manga. That was censorship. VIZ is no where in the hemisphere of precise.

I like FUNimation. Though they do make edits in the dubbed versions. They offer the subtitles uncensored. They give the consumer options,
secretzfanon Aug. 5, 2010 at 2:05 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: Wait your saying Viz sucks. OMFG I haven't seen nothing suckish from Viz.  Yea Viz doesn't have an alternate, but who needs one. Viz does Bleach, and Naruto with excellence.  If anyone should takes Funi's products it should gbe Viz. There right next to each other on my favorite metter.  I would love to watch anime dubbed by either. I mean it. I watch Bleach subbed and Bleach dub and hardly see a difference.  Whgen Funi does it and you compare dubs and subs there are a lot of differences in the voices, but that is it. When you watch DBZ dubbed  it is hard  to watch the subs, because the subs sound totally weird. Funi is pretty good es specially when it came to dialogue, and openings along with endings.
FoxxFireArt moderator on Aug. 5, 2010 at 2:16 p.m.
@secretzfan:
"Who needs an alternative?"
People who don't want censorship in their manga. People who want an accurate product. They even changed the entire cast of Detective Conan from Japanese to European.
VIZ doesn't do Bleach and Naruto with excellent. The Naruto manga is also censored. They often tamper with artwork and changed Rock Lee's Drunken Fist to "Loopy Fist". That is censorship. It's the reason I boycott their mangas and only read scnalations of VIZ series. Scanlations are far more accurate than what VIZ releases.

At least if FUNimation changes something in the dubs. They offer an unedited alternative in the subtitles.
secretzfanon Aug. 5, 2010 at 2:44 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: That isn't censorship for Naruto. Viz doesn't do completely terrible censors.  For Naruto I sure haven't seen big censors. I mean they still have drunk parts in it. If Viz was so big on censors they wouldn't still have Jiraya touching on women in the dubs. Funimation seems similar to Viz in away as well. I mean it Viz doesn't have a alternative, because they don't really need one I'm telling you. Viz is great the way it is. I mean you still got just about everything there. At least the dialogue doesn't change. Anyway it isn't that big of a topic. Funi and Viz are just too similar when it comes to dubbing. Anyway so yea at least they aren't as bad as 4 Kids we should be grateful for that. So if Funimation products went to Viz I am sure not complaining.
FoxxFireArt moderator on Aug. 5, 2010 at 2:56 p.m.
@secretzfan:
When they changed the Drunken Fist to the Loopy Fist is censorship. When you alter something because you think it is inapprotiate for the reading audience they are targeting and replace it with something else. That is censorship. The same way in movie that have cursing on TV. If they bleep it out or replace it with another word.
The Drunken Fist is a real technique. "Loopy Fist" was something VIZ replaced Drunken with because they didn't think it was appropriate for the character to be drunk. The Japanese version said Drunken Fist, because Lee accidentally drank saki. VIZ then censored it to say Loopy.
The Naruto manga also calls the the teachers "master" instead of the more accurate "sensei". They renamed all the "justu" into "art of".

Dubbing is not the issue. I'm not talking about animes. I'm talking about Manga, books you read. VIZ censors the manga and offers no alternative to their edits. They are a bad manga publisher. They are one of the worst manga publishers. Scanlations are the only way people can get the manga uncensored.
secretzfanon Aug. 5, 2010 at 6:34 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: I already know what censoring is, but your still wrong. If Viz was so bad then why do you hear a cussing word every 4 to 5 seconds. Viz has no reason to censor. Plus Viz does offer the original Japanese on there site.
FoxxFireArt moderator on Aug. 5, 2010 at 6:55 p.m.
@secretzfan:
I am talking about the "Bloody Manga"! How many different ways do I need to say it? They censored the Manga and offer no alternative what-so-ever to their edits and censorship of the Manga.

VIZ is to manga, what 4Kids is to anime.
secretzfanon Aug. 5, 2010 at 7:01 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt:  Oh you mean manga censoring. That I don't really since I hardly seen a manga outside of DBZ. Although I do have some Bleach manga, and there still pretty simular. No really I got the Bleach manga with Grimmjow and it has a lot of blood.  Plus the dialogue is exact
FoxxFireArt moderator on Aug. 5, 2010 at 7:16 p.m.
@secretzfan:
Whatever they do on Bleach is irrelevant to how they censor other series, such as Naruto, Detective Conan(Case Closed), and One Piece.

They have censored these books and offer no alternative to this censorship. That is why the scanaltions are more accurate. Censorship is a horrible thing that should never be supported.
secretzfanon Aug. 5, 2010 at 7:33 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: One Piece is owned by Funimation not Viz.
FoxxFireArt moderator on Aug. 5, 2010 at 7:40 p.m.
@secretzfan:
the One Piece Anime is done by FUNimation. That's done really well.

The One Piece Manga is published by VIZ.

Though on occasions FUNimation has done edits on the dubs. The subtitles are offered unedited.

VIZ publishes the manga. They censor, edit, and offer no alternatives. They are a terrible manga publisher.
