FUNimation Scores on Valentine's Day

FUNimation has announced four new acquisitions.

So, I could be out seeing Coraline right now, but I'm not. You know why? 'Cause FUNimation has sent me four press releases about four new acquisitions that they've announced at Katsucon, and you guys need the heads up. You're welcome! Here's the goods:

The Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of URUK. This fantasy anime from Gonzo was one of the first to be released simultaneously in Japan and the US via Crunchyroll and Bost. The series is loosely based on a classic old adventure game and features a young man named Jil, who wants to adventure to the top of the Tower of Druaga and do battle with the monster fabled to reside there. This is the first of at least two seasons; the second is currently airing in Japan (and on Crunchyroll).

Blassreiter. This is the other Gonzo anime that was simultaneously streamed in Japan and the US at the same time as Druaga, but instead of fantasy it's a sci-fi series. The story is set in an alternative Germany, where biomech creatures known as Demoniacs begin appearing throughout the country. These monsters can actually merge with technology, giving them frightening powers of destruction.

Dragonaut. Another Gonzo title, this time a strange merging of fantasy and sci-fi. Oh, and there are some truly amazing breasts in this show too, if that's your thing. The basic story is that Jin's family is killed and he becomes Whiny McAngstyFace until he meets Toa, who turns out to be an honest-to-god dragon. Turns out they live on another planet and were trying to see if Earth was a place they needed to attack or something. Humanity takes the dragons and begins to replicate them into creatures that, fused with a human master, function as weapons.

Bamboo Blade. Hey, wasn't I just talking about this show? You don't need another description, so I'll just use this space to tell you that it's an awesome series. Cute, funny, fantastic characters, catchy music, and an interesting story. What more do you want?

I'm so happy about Bamboo Blade! Dragonaut is recommended...to be avoided completely that is.

I'm gonna give Bamboo Blade a shot, it looks awesome.

I should give Druaga a shot just because the protagonist is a guy named Jil... and my name is Jill. I'm curious as to why a girl's name (well close enough to a girl's name) is for a dude.

Looks good

I'm happy about Bamboo Blade; it's definitely on my "buy" list.  I'm not so sure about Druaga... it's been mostly fun, but I hope it doesn't get the infamous Gonzo ending.

Not really interested in Blassreiter, and Dragonaut seemed like complete trash.

Dragonaut sounds like my thing.   How do I get it.
Sigueon Feb. 14, 2009 at 11:56 p.m.
@ethan: You don't. Dragonaut is terrible.

Much love for Bamboo Blade, though I never did finish it...

Ethan: You wait until FUNimation releases it and buy a copy. Or if you ask nicely, I can try and snag a review copy...but then you have to review it. And that means you have to watch it!
Sigueon Feb. 15, 2009 at 1:43 a.m.
Being forced to watch Dragonaut isn't a fate I would wish on anybody.
Devillyon Feb. 15, 2009 at 2:56 a.m.
Ive watched all those already at first i thought Blassreiter was a homage to Kamen Rider XD and yes Dragonaut sucked :P

More FUNi acquisitions? How many titles are they up to now? I'm going to go google it and find out.

Still, it makes me a bit concerned. Every time Funimation issues a press release for a new batch of titles, I can't help but think of the time when it was ADV Films doing all of this. Hopefully, FUNi won't make the same mistakes and end up biting off more than they can chew.

In the meantime, I'll probably drop Tower of Druaga in my rental queue; looks like it could be fun.

Blassreiter want

It's unfortunate that the awesomeness of Bamboo Blade in this post is immediately canceled out by the abomination that is Dragonaut....
