FUNimation announces dub cast for Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

Spike Spencer brings back the emo once again!

Let me first get this off my chest, Spike Spencer is back as Shinji! Without Spike, there would be no Shinji, I can’t imagine anyone else playing this bad boy. Back to business, FUNimation has announced today at Anime Boston a good majority of the dub cast for the American release of Evangelion: 1.0 film. The same voice actors that played Shinji, and Misato, and Gendo (director’s cut) will return to their rightful places. However, Rei will have a new voice actress, Brina Palencia. She is a newer voice actor who has been in such roles as Chopper in One Piece, Yin in Darker Than Black, Nia in Fullmetal Alchemist, Juliet in Romeo X Juliet, and nameless girl in episode 5 of Solty Rei.

I will miss the old Rei, Amanda Winn-Lee, but I'm not too fazed by this change; honestly she doesn’t really speak much anyways. The Evangelion dub will always have a special place in my heart, even now that I’m a pure vegan sub-etarian. It had to been one of the best dubs of any anime, so let’s hope this one can do just as well. You can check it out at Anime Expo 2009 in Los Angeles.

Great...the same VA I can't stand as Shinji. I'll give the dub a chance but I highly doubt I will be able to stand it now good thing there will be subs. I highly disliked Asuka's English VA and I sure hope they change her for the next movie.

HAHAHAHAHA. I am so glad Misato, Shinji, and Gendou will be the same. A different Rei is a tad depressing, but i am open to a new performance. Though, if Tiffany Grant isn't Asuka in the next movie, I will flip so much shit. She was perfect.

This calls for a rewatch of the dub before the premier.

Hah, I saw Eva 1.0 twice at expo last year. I cant believe its almost a month away.

I've always hated the Eva dub cast, particularly for Shinji. But Shinji's Japanese voice was equally unbearable so whatever...? Really, Shinji's fail voice in both languages might be one of the biggest reasons I ever really took to Eva on the whole... <_<

I like that it seems they tried the cast back. It's nice to have good voice actors carry over, and Eva had a decent dub.

Can't wait to see this at AX since I saw the subs last year and they were very hard to read. Will be nice to have an English dub! Although I haven't watched the English dub of Eva...maybe I should get on that!

Ditto, I do hope Grant will be acting as Asuka.
   Cannot wait to buy this, I'm really looking forward to it.

After having heard Brina Palencia as Ennis in Baccano, I think she'd fit pretty well. Where the heck has Spike been the past, oh, 10 years??

I've never found Eva's dub to be particularly good, in fact there's a credible argument to be made that the dub changes or ruins important dramatic moments in the series. Now, maybe that's debatable, but it's established fact that it was only the third dub ADV ever did, that it was done at a desperate breakneck pace without knowing where the story was going, and that the actors were all hired out of the same improv theater troupe. Not what I'd call a recipe for success. More like a recipe for cutting costs.

And Spike Spencer's Shinji voice is really close to Mickey Mouse (his words, not mine).

I liked the English voice cast for the series... I am a bit saddened by the change from Amanda Wynn Lee, and hope they get Tiffany Grant for Asuka. I thoroughly enjoyed the series when it first came out.
