FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST #6 - - Watch & Learn

Yeah. The gag with the dog works better in this one.

Ah-ha. There it is. There’s that chilling Chimera incident I remember (along with a few other episodes' material for your money, as well). Seems like this version’s slicing and rearranging a few chapters like… like… like a chimera that’s been sewn together by so much unholy, perverted science!

Again, it’s been a long time since I watched BROTHERHOOD (I do distinctly remember Vic Mignogna practically shouting, “Holy shit! It’s a baby!” during Hughes’ wife’s delivery in that version, though) so I’m not sure how effective a point-for-point comparison would be here. If they have cut out the sad twist to the business with Nina, then that really would be one of the more saccharine, scarredy-cat clumps of “Hollywood horseshit” I’ve come across in any adaptation.

If that suckerpunch is still coming an episode or two down, though? If we’re made to grow even more attached to this innocent, little girl? Then these show’s actually a hell of lot darker at this stage.

I don’t recall there being any scene where Ed has to prove his alchemical abilities in BROTHERHOOD and, now that it’s been presented, it really seems like a no-brainer. What better way to test a fledgling alchemist's skills than to give him loads of raw, natural material to manipulate? And, correct me if I’m wrong, but BROTHERHOOD actually started with Ed already not needing a transmutation to perform his magic, right? While I’m having issues with how this version’s kind-of ambling along to its main arc, it is more effective to actually have the leads going through some kind of learning curve this early on.

Speaking of which - - it’s absolutely hilarious how this show makes no bones about presenting Ed & Al as the biggest nerds. You ever seen any heroes getting that excited about textbooks? C'mon, now...

Watch this episode, "The State Alchemist Certification Examination” here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

Darker indeed. I'm having a hard time waiting for "the divergence". It may seem like a lot of rehash, but I'm excited to read your thoughts on the rest of the series.

When will I be sent my no-prize?

Intelligent heroes and villains can be cool. Don't call them nerdy just because they enjoy knowledge. I thought you were better than that, Tom.

@Lurkero: Nerds are cool now, and I think it's better to be called a nerd than a geek, because at least geeks are knowledgeable about important things.

Brotherhood skipped through a lot of the early material since it'd already been covered. The first series has more episodes focussed on the Elric's and Nina's relationship which made the big reveal even worse!

I don't remember the first one as being darker what made the second one better was its darkness up to the ending which was happy when the ending to the first one was INCREDIBLY and unnecessarily dark. I also remember the whole chimera thing being handled differently but it has been even longer for me since I have seen any of these.
