First Look at Madhouse's X-Men Anime

Note to self: trying to spell out the X-Men Animated Series theme song does not work out well.

Madhouse Studios has been developing Marvel Comics' stories and characters into anime. Iron ManWolverineX-Men and Blade are the comic book series that will be (or already are) getting an anime adaptation.

While Iron Man and Wolverine have been getting mixed reviews from both anime and comic book fans, the next series shows promise. X-Men are getting the anime treatment next and recently the character designs and cast have surfaced the internet along with a trailer:

The storyline for the series was created by noted comic book scribe Warren Ellis and appears to be heavily influenced from the Grant Morrison New X-Men run as well as Joss Whedon’s two year stint on Astonishing X-Men. The series takes place one year after the death of Jean Grey and the dissolution of the team.

The cast consists of:

If you read comic books then this series might interest you even more since the anime will be loosely based on the first arc of the 2004's Astonishing X-Men series. The anime will begin on April 1st and will be broadcast on G4TV later this year. Any of you interested in this anime adaptation?

I wouldn't call this showing promise. That's your conjecture or your hope. This shows promise the way that first trailer for Iron Man showed promise, but the final animation used looked silly for the characters and the CG elements stood out like a sore thumb. The Wolverine anime trailer looked so overly pretty that it was laughable for a character such as Wolverine.

Those character images in this picture looks like a bad RPG graphic. They are using an animation style from ten years ago. This looks closer to an imitation of what they did in Death Note only not as polished. It looks pretty shotty for a production company that has made Black Lagoon and Highschool of the Dead

I'm actually more surprised they didn't go with BONES for the studio. They produced Heroman. While I never liked the story and I thought their protagonist looked like a girl. I do think their animation style would work for X-Men.

Wow, airing on G4. I'm sure tens of people will be watching it then. This is the same group that goes to San Diego Comic Con and only promotes the movies and TV series. I would think they were being serious if they would also air it on Anime News Network or Crunchyroll. The places anime fans actually go for anime online.  Airing it on G4 tells me they aren't targeting anime fans with this, so then what's the point of hiring an anime studio to produce it?

It all seems fitting that this will air on April 1st.

I find it weird too that it is coming on G4 and not a place where Anime and/or Comic fans will go to.
Wolverine anime was better then Ironman anime but wasn't great so I not expect this to be good as well.

Oh Good!  I'm not the only one who thought so!

Hey old animation styles aren't bad.  Just not good for this concept.  I mean they are trying to be "hip and cool" by "tapping into that whole Anime Thing" right? :p

This last bit pretty much sums it all up.  Is it just me or are these attempts to "Mainstream" anime just driving down everything?

NO. NO. NO.

Sorry, but everything about this scream's garbage, especially making cyclops gayer than usual.

@Gozertc:@nk19:
Marvel's biggest problem is that they are too busy trying to go "art house" anime rather than just trying to make a good looking anime. They are lacking in an artistic direction. You can see it in the animes they have produced so far. They need to stop trying to make everything look so "pretty".

Look at Black Lagoon and Highschool of the Dead. Both are Madhouse production that look amazing. That's probably because they were following the intended vision of the original manga.

Is there going to be a manga to go along with the anime.

I really don't like the marvel anime, they don't seem right to me.
sickVisionz moderator on March 3, 2011 at 4:49 p.m.
I haven't watched any of the other Marvel anime cuz they looked kinda crummy and this one does as well, but I'll probably give this one a shot.  X-Men was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid and I loved all of the Genesis games and X-Men vs Street Fighter was the game that got me into fighting games.

Kinda upset that the art style isn't like any of this stuff come to life though:

You know what's bad?   I'd watch X-Men First Class over this.  I expect both to butcher the source material but this looks like a generic anime.   If it weren't for the blue and yellow, you could practically paste those characters into other shows.   Give Cyclops a domed helmet and long hair and he'd be Zechs Marquise.

Indeed.   At least they're not inventing new protagonists.

you do know that was just a screen test and not the real deal?
And yes, he's suppose to look more like the Hugh Jackman Wolverine then Comics Wolverine, let's not forget that most of the japanese only know Wolverine from the movies.

I'm also wondering which characters they also gonna use the show. I remember that Shingen and Omega Red were in the Wolverine anime.

I was a fan of the first arc of Astonishing X-Men, it rekindled my interest in X-Men again. So I'll give it a chance.

I'm no genius but I reckon it's probably got something to do with Japanese people making it for a Japanese audience...

Could've fooled me for a female version of Scott Summers.  No joke.  Looks like he has tittles.  Beast too.

I don't get why some of you are hating on the images and trailer, this looks awesome!

@Gregomasta: holy shit, I can't unsee that now, thanks. :)
