Wow, this isn't really even a harem, but the main character gets introduced to at least a half-dozen prospective romantic interests in the first episode.
Right, so...Reifon is a General Studies student who is just starting out on a small scholarship at the Zenri Academy. On the day of the entrance ceremony, he saves one of his fellow students, which brings him to the attention of the student body president. Since the students of the school run the city, the president is basically in charge of everything. He recognizes that Reifon has some background in fighting and bumps him into the Military Studies department, as well as bumping up his scholarship rank. Then Nina, the leader of the much-maligned 17 Platoon, claims him for her team.
Throughout the episode we see what are apparently flashbacks to Reifon's past as a fighter; a battle against one of the giant monsters that presumably still threatens the earth. We also see a flashback to his girlfriend(?), who lays a kiss on him within the first few minutes of the ep. Not exactly sure what role she'll have in the series, but I expect we'll be seeing her again.
That's about all we know so far. The episode packed a lot (like, really, a LOT) of characters in, although they managed to do it in such a way that I didn't feel completely overwhelmed; I remember the characters that are important to the immediate plot, and the rest will presumably be introduced fully later. Strong animation, and the design of the military uniforms is fun. The characters we do get to know are lively.
I suspect the show is aiming to be a strong ensemble piece like Fullmetal Alchemist and Code Geass were (or Dragonauts tried and failed to be). We'll have to wait and see if they succeed at that, but in the mean time, it looks like it'll be an interesting show. I'm almost certainly going to keep up with it.
