Final Fantasy VII Gets a New OVA

Excuse me, I have to go do a little happy dance now.

Well, sort of! Famitsu has confirmed that the novel Final Fantasy VII: Episode Denzel: On the Way to a Smile, released along with two other novellas in the Advent Children Complete Blu-Ray set, is being developed into an OVA, also released with the set.

The three novels follow three characters during the two-year period between the original Final Fantasy VII game's ending and the beginning of the Advent Children movie: Tifa, Barret, and...Denzel. Don't remember Denzel? He's the young boy who appears in Advent Children as a victim of Geostigma. Adult!Denzel tells his story because he wants to enlist in the World Regeneration Organization, which is being run by former Shinra head Reeve (also known as Cait Sith).

This isn't Final Fantasy VII's first anime-- an OVA titled Last Order, which told the story of Zack's unfortunate demise and came out with the Advent Children Ultimate Edition. And It's no Final Fantasy VII game remake. But it's probably going to be pretty cool.

EDIT: My sincerest apologies, guys. I misread the Japanese article. Actually, I really think I hallucinated the word "TV" in there, by virtue of my desire to see such a thing. m(_ _)m Mooshiwake gozaimasen!

Hm, I thought that this release was just going to a single episode attached to the Blu-ray release next month.

otakureview: You're right; I hallucinated. (I SWEAR it said TVアニメ the first time I looked!) I was in the middle of editing when I saw your comment =P

I dont think it will stop, its a good series to make money off.

I think VII in particular has a sticking power because it had a love triangle (which never grows old) and its story had a strong environmentalist streak about protecting the earth from people who abuse its resources and living in harmony, etc. (which is particularly topical and interesting to people these days). It was also just an awesome game.

SOMEDAY we'll get our next-gen remake. It just might not be until the NEXT next-gen...

FF7 has a sticking power not because of the love triangle, far from it. Romance (what romance?) has little to do with how popular FF7 is. Rather, while i agree to some degree with you're second point, the reason this story is so damn popular is because the characters are so fleshed out, that we as viewers can relate to the them. It has little to do with the environment or about the story about protecting and all that bullshit. But the characters who are so damn real and flawed, we like them so much more. While they are super human with powers and magic, they are like normal people. Flawed and far from perfect.

This is the reason why FF7 is so popular, even now. FF12 or even 10 or 11 couldn't hold a candle to FF7. I have great deal of respect to FF7 and for the creators of this game. Respect.

Calaveras: You have clearly not spent much time going through VII doujinshi :) The Cloud/Tifa/Aeris thing pops up a LOT. Perhaps it's not part of why the game is "respected," but doujinshi and other fan works definitely play a role in keeping a franchise alive, whether it's an aspect of the game you like or not. :)

But I certainly didn't mean to trivialize the characters, which of course play an enormous role. One of my big problems with XII was that its characters (with the occasional exception of Balthier) were so thoroughly devoid of any kind of life or liveliness.

Here's something related to Final Fantasy VII which I can't shut up about:  Where's Tifa?  It was bad enough they created a fake Tifa for the Advent Children film, all politically correct with ten times the clothing and half the hair of the real Tifa.  But then they kill her off!  Now she's demoted to the level of some kid named Denzel?  The Greater Japanese Co-Misogyny Sphere is having a field day destroying beloved female characters lately.

Flyvapnet: Kill her off? I definitely don't remember THAT. That said, I didn't mind Tifa's design in Advent Children. Less skimpy, sure, but the world looked a bit colder ;) And it was still a pretty nice design.

i'm a HUGE part of FF7 and i have never read a single doujinshi. lol  and i agree with you on X11, i tried playing the game but gave up through out the game. It's just so damn boring.

hold on...let me leave a better review when i'm a bit more..sober. lol

is it only on blue-ray, i dount have it! :(
transgojoboton March 4, 2009 at 4:59 p.m.
You must've hallucinated the "TV series" bit, gia, because you really, REALLY want to see it happen. And I share those sentiments. Therefore, Square needs to stop screwing around and give us (me) what we want:

A 26-episode Turk-focused, Before Crisis TV series! *pumps fist*

Those animated commercials for the BC mobile game were the worst teases imaginable. Square needs to throw a middle finger to the economic downturn, cut a bigger check to Madhouse and go all in. :)

i cant what!!!!!!!!!!! XD i hpoe its not only on blue-ray, that wood suck!!!!!!!!!!!!
