Expo Finally Jumps on the Maid Train

Everybody ought to have a maid o/~

When was the first maid cafe at an anime convention? I don't have the specific history, but I'm sure one of us nerds out there does.

That said, maid cafes at cons have been going on for years now, and Anime Expo has finally announced that they'll be running one, too: the AniMaid Cafe, which is currently seeking volunteer maids AND hosts. You have to be at least 18, have a “great personality,” and be able to provide your own outfit within their dress code. Oh, and make meetings for training.

Expo being Expo, they'll surely do their best to step up the maid cafe a notch. The main thing I notice in the press release is that there'll be “live performances” in the cafe, along with food, drinks, contests, and prizes (i.e. the usual suspects). The other thing they advertise that I'm curious about is the “interactive games,” but I guess we'll see.

That said, at risk of tooting my own home convention's horn, I like KumoriCon's Maid Squad better. Why waste time waiting to get into a cafe when there can be maids running around actually being productive convention volunteers?

On the other hand, if what you want is quality time with a maid (or host), I guess you can't get it if they're running around like all the other con people. So what do you think? Will you be checking out Expo's AniMaid Cafe?

I do not like maid cafes.

@Kuro: Are you insane?! O:

I share Kuro's sentiment, although my feeling is more passive - I simply don't care for them. I remember the poor management of the maid cafe at Fanime 2007 (the 1st time they tried it) and though I'm very sure they have made improvements last year and for 2009, I'm not planning to stop by there when I go later this month because it's not my thing. I will try to take a peek at it when I first get there, though.

AX has a bigger hall in the LACC so the mention of "live performances" doesn't surprise me that much.

I'm with Kuro and CalAggie. Most con maid cafes consist of attention-hungry girls and the kind of guys who prefer a 2D character over a real human being with flaws and problems and imperfections.

I'm not saying no one has fun with them or that they shouldn't happen or anything, I just don't enjoy them myself. And I think maids are hot, too.

I like them and the pretty girls who like anime as much as I do to attend an anime convention and they're willing to cosplay. Although it does feel awkward to see all this girls attending to your needs. I feel like a chauvinist and I feel guilty bacuse of it.
