Evangelion 2.0 Wins Big Opening Weekend

Are Japanese fans more excited to see more Asuka, or to meet Makinami Mari Illustrious?

Are Japanese fans more excited to see more Asuka , or to meet Makinami Mari Illustrious ? It's hard to tell, but either way, Oricon reports that Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance scored more than 500 million yen-- actually, about $5.3 million USD --from June 27th to June 28th.

Now, that's not an amazing amount by US standards, and not even by Japanese standards-- assuming that boxofficemojo uses the same two-day weekend format, this'll put Evangelion 2.0 in the top 100 openings, somewhere in the stratosphere of L: Change the World , Ocean's Twelve, and Men in Black II. And Eva 2.0 is still the number one movie in Japan, knocking Tohou's Rookies and Paramount's Transformers 2 off the top spot. Also worth noting: it's almost twice the 280 million yen opening weekend that Evangelion 1.0 saw. Hmmm!

While I'm at it, you should check out alafista , which has a copy of the brochure for the movie that's circulating around right now.

How about you guys? Which are you more excited about, classic Asuka or the illustrious new Mari?

I'm excited more for Asuka than Mari. I'm feeling the urge to re-watch the entire series.
