EUREKA SEVEN #47 -- Watch & Learn

It's like Holland's in a REAL WORLD confessional.

Appropriately enough, this show came up during a conversation I was having with some comics creators at a C2E2 after-party. We were talking about some of our favorite TV shows. Keeping my picks to anime, I threw the likes of EVANGELION, ESCAFLOWNE and GURREN LAGANN out there and - - wouldn’t you know it? - - one of the guys then expressed his appreciation for EUREKA SEVEN.

The jury’s still out on this show, for me. It’s got a few episodes left to potentially screw everything up, so I’m playing it cautiously optimistic. However, I don’t think it’s too early to start making a summation about what sets EUREKA SEVEN apart from other mecha shows. See, the guy at the party focused on the wind-surfing, describing the show as being like a mecha POINT BREAK. Myself, I thought it was handier to say it was like a REAL WORLD cast becoming mecha pilots for a season.

Both are handY comparators but, now that we’ve gotten into this final Acperience episode, it seems more to the point to emphasize how understated and (comparatively) down-to-Earth it is. Even when it devotes a whole episode like this to esoteric concepts, the experience doesn’t feel as mind-knotting as EVANGELION is. All the particulars about trapars and scub corals and so on are almost like background dressing for the show’s true interest - - the characters.

I’m not saying its character-based in a qualitative sense, necessarily. That’s just one quality to be satisfied out of a bunch that includes action, concepts, humor and what not. However, much like a REAL WORLD season (AHEM) that inter-personal are certainly where the focus is…

Do you lunatics concur?

Watch this episode, "Acperience 4” here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

hmm the philosophy falls down and is not explored adequately in the later episodes having watched only 1 episode of the real world and finding it nauseating I can't really compare the two except to say this isn't nearly as annoying and empty. The focus on the interpersonal to the detriment of the philosophy is one of the problems with the show.

Dig Deeper into Eureka Seven

A young boy named Renton has a mech and its pilot, the young-looking Eureka, nearly fall into his lap. He joins them and their renegade group, Gekkostate.
