Epic Moments of Anime: Game Changing and Bloody Death

There are plenty of deaths in anime, but few can dramatically alter the course of a series.

Hey Vicers! Sorry for the absence but I am back with some very EPIC moments in anime. The moments I have today are from an anime that continues to spark controversy and heated debated across the world while the other is super bloody and makes ZombiePie cringe (which makes it awesome just for that, tehe). Interested yet? Well you should be!

The Death of L

Look into my eyes!
Look into my eyes!

This moment is epic because one of the greatest anime antagonists dies 2/3 through the show! Death Note is another anime full of epic moments and this has to be one of the biggest. It was quite a shocker when I first watched the show. Having not read the manga I thought L was going to be around until the bitter end. But the combined feeling of losing L and Light winning makes this moment one of the top-tier moments of anime epicness. The look on Light’s face as L dies is almost poetic. I certainly had a hearty laugh. This moment meant the anime was taking a turn at finding a new way for the world to be rid of Kira with more twists and plotting-and “good” guys.

This moment flared a lot of talk in the otaku community. Most feel the anime lost its way by having L die and bringing in new detectives. But sometimes great anime need great change and moments like this to keep viewers guessing. I was certainly at the edge of my seat for the whole show.

You can watch the episode with this moment, "Silence", below.

The Intro of Blood and Dismemberment

Scared yet?
Scared yet?

I’ll say right now that Elfen Lied is not a show for the weak-stomached. Lots of blood and gore. And what better way to start a show full of those things than 7 1/2 minutes of Tarantino-style blood-splattering and beheadings?! When I first saw this show, I was like, “**** yeah!” I was in shock and awe from such a start. It’s quite the opposite of the depressing German poem intro song. Just goes to show that pink-haired naked girls by the name of Lucy are really dangerous when they have invisible hands (called vectors). This moment, since it’s the beginning of the show, provides the setting of psychological distress along with more blood. An overall sad show with lots of people dying gruesomely.

I’m not sure what this moment means to the otaku community except that it set a precedent for how bloody an anime can be and how many people can be killed in a short time (and a series as a whole). I think it is one hell of a moment even though it’s a long one. This moment helped me come up with an idea on how to create an anime even bloodier with more dead bodies.

You can watch the episode with this moment over on The Anime Network, "Begegnung - Encounter", here.

So what do you Vicers think? Do these moments count as epic in your book or do they fall flat? Maybe some of you keep away from this stuff. Let’s hear your thoughts!

Death Note and Elfen Lied are both awesome, they both definitely did some amazing things. Also i'm pretty sure the intro song for Elfen Lied is in latin, not german.

It's a shame the only good thing about Elfen Lied was the first seven and a half minutes.

Would have liked to see you pick some less obvious choices. I already knew both these scenes and neither makes me have any interest in either series.

Steins Gate has a pretty good one when

Mayuri keeps dying and Okabe has to figure out how to stop it.

If you do a column like this it might be better to pick the less obvious choices so that more people will be interested in reading. Everyone knows the Death Note moment (although many will still complain so a Spoiler tag at the beginning of the article might be needed).

That would mean avoiding Gurren Lagann for the moment as well.

It's weird to see you call L the antagonist. I always saw him as the protagonist. Though thanks to that, I really disliked Death Note after his death (didn't finish it) - but it really got a rise out of me: "They killed the main character? WTF?". Later on, I rewatched the series while rooting for Light and I was enjoying - until they fucked me over again right at the end. Such a great series in many ways and yet so frustrating.

When I first watched Touch, it really blew my mind. The death in that had such a huge impact and it came out of nowhere - I think it has to be the most shocking death in any series I've watched.

Oh, and the Steins;Gate death that @InfiniteGeass mentions... The first one is really shocking, because of how sudden and brutal it is, but the train one was almost as bad if not worse. That whole part of the series is really emotionally draining.

I just watched Elfen Lied a few months ago and enjoyed it. This was the first anime where the violence kind of turned my stomach a bit and I've seen some violent anime in the past. I guess it was because I knew nothing about it going in besides "Oh new anime on Netflix!" and it all just started happening...

Kittan death is pretty epic, even more epic than Kamina. The multiple deaths of Musashi Tomoe(Getter Robo) in his different incarnations can also count

Some of the best deaths in anime are the touching ones for me. Like Mikage's in 07-Ghost. Oooooh or in Tomoe in Madoka Magica. :P

Although I have to say that in the end of Sword of the Stranger when Nanashi and Luo-Lang duke it out, it was an epic battle and death for Luo-Lang.

@ZombiePie: I was pretty choked when Grandpa Simpson died, too.

NO ONE, STOOPID was the murderer? Amazing twist.

I can top that, the death of sloth in the first anime.  The music, Vic's acting, and the fact that ed just evaporated his own mother are what makes it amazing.

This. The sad passing of Kamina in Gurren Lagann was a moment that I was blown away about when it happened, for I had not read the manga and was not expecting it.

Death Note's is huge; unfortunately, that specific one was pretty much the end of when I liked Death Note. AIR and Kanon are standouts, obviously, and the less said about School Days, the better.

And, of course, Code Geass Episodes 22-23. Jeezus, that one was crazy.

RecSpecon Nov. 7, 2011 at 11:27 p.m.

I wonder if people would've liked the second "half" of Death Note better if they didn't try to cram it all into 12-13 episodes.

ZombiePieon Nov. 8, 2011 at 12:25 a.m.

Wait a minute...I just recently saw this:

....heated debated across the world while the other is super bloody and makes ZombiePie cringe (which makes it awesome just for that, tehe).

@AURON570:

I just know that the poem is German. That's what I meant-not what it is sang in.

@rubberluffy:

I'm getting there.

@ZombiePie:

Very good, sir.

@Little_Socrates:

I just did something on School Days. Never thought about it for this segment but thanks to you it's going to be in here at some point! As for Code Geass, I'm working on picking the right moments.

Mezmeroon Nov. 9, 2011 at 12:23 a.m.

Shirohige died standing. It's a cliche` that has never been done so well. His death literally changed the era within One Piece. I'm so glad I don't read the comics.

Dig Deeper into Death Note

A shounen franchise of enormous popularity, Death Note started with Tsugumi Ohba's manga, illustrated by the popular artist Takeshi Obata. The series is essentially an extended police chase thriller, but with added twists, including the existence of Shinigami (death gods) who can control the death of humans.
