Epic Moments of Anime: A Whole New Level

If you like epic insanity, you can't do much better than Gurren Lagann.

Epicness in anime and manga can be found in a wide variety genres and series. But action just about always takes the cake. Today I’m taking you on a journey through a moment in a series which defines itself as epic and another that validates a middle finger in the air. As always, PM me if you have something in mind I should check out.

Galaxy Shuriken

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

This moment pretty much caps off Gurren Lagann. GL-like a foil for Evangelion-takes upon itself to shred through time-space logic for amech battle of galactic proportions as galaxies are hurled back and forth. I haven’t seen the movies but the series sure makes a spectacle of one-upping itself time and again. Gurren Lagann doesn't quite get the recognition it deserves but the fans who do know it love it.

The significance of this moment in the series is that it is one of many climaxes in Simon and crew’s battle to save humanity. This, of course, isn’t the only epic moment in the show but it gets my vote for putting epic in all caps! You can watch my full thoughts on the show in Dunce Cap: Spiral Energy Helps Me Fight the Power!

You can watch this moment in the episode, "All the Lights in the Sky Are Stars" below.

The Black Lagoon Takes Flight

Does something seem out of place here?
Does something seem out of place here?

This moment from Black Lagoon, and the series as well, may not seem up to epic standards but believe me that such levels of awesome, crazy, badass-ness warrant such description. I mean, there’s a mother******* boat ramping a capsized boat and shooting mother******* torpedoes at a mother******* attack helicopter!! That kind of stuff is funny and awesome at the same time. You couldn’t expect anything less from Lagoon Company. This moment doesn’t matter much to otaku culture except for many of us wanting to see it in live-action.

This moment has meaning to the series though. It pretty much settles that Rock is just the right kind of nuts that suits becoming a member of Lagoon Company. Plenty of adventures to follow.

There is little that is more epic than that moment in Baccano where Ladd, who was flying off a train, punched the pole he was about to crash into.  I burst out laughing when I saw it.

My favourite part is where Ladd kicks the guy's gun back and pulls the trigger and kills his buddy. Or, the one where Frio jumps on the car and kicks that mo fo in the face.

Black Lagoon was amazingly ridonkulous.

11 Million light-years tall.

That's not even... It's...

For the record, that means that, if you were at TTGL's foot, it would take 11 million years for you to see it's head.

In addition, if it moves it's arm, the resulting speed at which it's hands move would be physically impossible, according to Einstein's theory of relativity.

The galaxy shuriken is certainly one of the top moments I have ever been awed by. How can you get more epic than throwing a galaxy!?

Well there was the part were the Anti-spiral smashes some galaxys together to creat an artificial big bang for an attack, and the resulting outcome of that attack.

The end of Shin Getter Robo is pretty damn epic, the last battle of the Gunbuster and Diebuster series as well.

Well, thanks for reminding me about Black Lagoon. I totally forgot to go find Second Barrage somewhere and watch the heck out of it. Legally, of course.

sotyfan16on Oct. 1, 2011 at 3:28 a.m.

@teekomeeko:

It's not being streamed anywhere. If it was I would have included a video. FUNi doesn't even have it for Instant Watch on Netflix as far as I know. In order to watch it legally you'll have to buy it. The current boxset has both seasons. I suggest going to RightStuf for the purchase.

@Falken:

I'll have to give that a look.

@kashif1: @Superevil225:

I'll have to rewatch the show to get an idea of what would work for this segment.

Falkenon Oct. 1, 2011 at 6:31 a.m.

@sotyfan16: Without Getter Robo, Tengen Toppa wouldnt be the same as it is now

The galaxy shuriken thing was over the top ludicrious. and Yoko was sniping and shooting a FRICKIN PLANET.

I think, one of the best moment of TTGL is when Simon after the dead of Kamiya recovers his spirit's fight and rescue Nia from Adiane.

damswedonon Oct. 1, 2011 at 12:10 p.m.

I present to you the moment when Nichijou peaked.

Dunchadon Oct. 1, 2011 at 12:53 p.m.

@damswedon: Nichijou definitely has a lot of moments I would classify as "epic". Since we're on this vein, I'll pitch in with this:

The series had a lot of episodes that didn't work for me, but every now and then it would hit all the right notes and had me rolling on the floor. Mio was definitely my favourite and Yukko's dreams about those wooden cubes were just great as well. :)

@Lifestrike: wait..you were expecting logic in GL? You do realize this is the ANTI eva right?

InfiniteGeasson Oct. 1, 2011 at 6:50 p.m.

Huge spoilers for Steins;Gate. I really thought this scene from the penultimate episode was pretty freaking epic. Okabe always delivers with his great mad scientist laugh.

Not if this is true (which I doubt is, but here's hoping)
