EDGE OF TOMORROW -- Have You Seen It?

It's the best received American-Otaku movie yet. What'd you think of it?

You might have noticed, but the prospect of Hollywood remaking anime and manga remains a perennial topic on our boards...

We’re a few years past the poorly-received PRIEST and discussions of an American version of DEATH NOTE keep popping up, and yet, EDGE OF TOMORROW somehow skirted around our usual otaku discussions.

True, it’s based on a light novel, not a manga per se, but that distinction is really a matter of semantics. There are no less than two manga versions floating around. It's a loose adaptation, too. The film’s largely used the book as springboard, expanding the premise significantly and filling in many more details about life on Earth following the Mimic Invasion. And the lead character also had to be changed a bit to fit Tom Cruise, of course...

Still, the film has an astounding 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the moment-- and that’s worth celebrating since the memory of, say, DRAGON BALL EVOLUTION’s abysmal 14% rating will still cause a shudder. We’re still only a week out from the release. Plenty of you Vicers have had a chance to see it, now. The topic’s still timely to open up...

What did you think of EDGE OF TOMORROW? How did it compare to ALL YOU NEED IS KILL (for those of you who actually read the book?) Is this how you hope more J-FI movies will look, going forward? What other titles would you like to see get this treatment? Sound off below!

I loved this movie!, it was absolutely brilliant!, It even managed to capture the appeal of great Sci fi anime, with sly dark humor interlaced with drama That is still palatable, further more did anyone see that big Ass sword, the blonde chick carries!, I definelty hope we get more anime or manga Adaptions of this kind, if this and last years Mecha/Kaiju Homage "Pacific Rim" are any thing to go by, there may be hope,

Meh, I like the Manga (haven't read the light novel yet) better. It just feel like the standard action movie. Miss the giant battle ax they use in the novel and Manga version

Anyway, I glad it did well

Um its doing well in reviews but not at the box office last I heard.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=allyouneediskill.htm Its not made its budget back as of this posting including world wide money :/ Actualy some radio reviews just called it a video game movie. None of what it was based on was mentioned.

The premise is interesting and the good reviews are a plus. I will probably wait for Redbox though.

@Marshal Victory: It looks like it will inevitably make its money back at the box office. It's only been a week.

The movie was okay but isn't all that memoreable in the long run - ironically i just uploaded my own YOUTUBE REVIEW on it as well

Decent summer action flick at best...wondering how much better the manga* is now

I pretty much avoid Tom Cruise movies altogether.

@sickVisionz: Well it will, but summer block buster it was supposed to be its not.

"Also, in its second weekend is The Fault In Our Stars which opened to a whopping $48M last weekend and is already going into profit, and the big-budget Edge Of Tomorrow, which didn’t open well last weekend for its star Tom Cruise in the states but is doing much better overseas. Much of Edge‘s storyline is, in fact, more tailored to an international audience as a lot of the action takes place Germany, France, Spain, Italy and eventually into the heart of Paris. Most people I know who have seen this film enjoy it; Warner Bros. is hoping it will have legs, but its mid-week numbers are meh." from

Predicitons now are saying it will take in the States before its run is over 100 million so that with what it got international it make its money back.. just. Dont forget the movie studios do not include add budget into the movie budget. An the rule of thumb there is 25% of the movies cost to make is whats used to advertise. So if to make was the $178 million add $44.5 million advertising budget on top of that.

In other words it will do as well as http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=greenlantern.htm if predictions hold true an thats not good.
