DRAMAtical mURDER #1 -- Special Review

Must all nerds be bullied?

We’re sampling the summer season’s selection! Check out our other pilot write-up’s –

I was a little apprehensive going into this. Based on the synopsis, the show looked like it'd be fulfilling some of my most reliable rules for a show being not-so-great. First, there was the needlessly-convoluted spelling in the title. Then, there was the promise - - nay, the threat - - of this being a show about MMO’s getting’ real.

Well, there are always exceptions to rules. Sometimes, there are even exceptions to two rules, at once.

DRAMATICAL MURDER proved to have a lot more personality I was expecting. It’s not the dour, self-serious, pretty boy cyberpunk gloom fest that it seemed to be shaping up to be. Interestingly enough, it’s much more urban than expected, offering what feels like an authentic representation of what it’d be like, being a twenty something with a shitty job in the arts district of a future megalopolis. When the MMO’s get real, they’re far more abstract and creative than the usual pseudo-medieval sword fight - - more like a futurist extension of rap battles, dance-offs or competitive graffiti.

Unexpectedly, my only gripe with this show is that it’s lazy about earning brownie points; reaching for the really low-hanging fruit of a bully rescue on more than one occasion. Sure, it’s a reliable way to get the job done, making your audience root for a guy who might otherwise seem like an asshole. However, I feel like if the crew’s already using such creativity to show what life would be like in the future (between the holographic stop signs on the cross walks and the talking dogs), they could dig a little deeper than that all-too-familiar scene of non-descript goons roughing a nerd up in alley or hallway. And twice, at that.

Watch "Data_01_Login" and decide for yourself.

DRAMAtical Murder is actually based on an eroge, visual novel game aim towards women.

@takashichea: Err wait I have heard this before an it confuses me. How is Yaoi aimed at women? Is it a cultural fetish ? Because that does not make the case from the comments about this show on various sites who the end target watcher is.

Yes I understand their is a community that likes slash fiction in that vein. But that community is not aimed at women either. Thus my confusion.

Regardless of the question this is the best of the 1st 3 episodes as it goes down hill in quality rather fast.

@Marshal Victory:

To be honest, I'm not sure. This is what I picked up. Predominantly, yaoi is written by women for women. You would think Yaoi would be aimed towards guys. Interestingly, opposites attract.

  • Yaoi - mostly aimed at women
  • Yuri - mostly aimed at men
YotaruVegetaon July 24, 2014 at 6:07 p.m.

@Marshal Victory: Ask non-Japanese folk whether they like yaoi or not. It's mostly women. Later episodes of this show further reveal this show's erotic origins. You get the feeling that certain characters are meant to be together.

BTW, everyone, DO NOT turn safe search off when image searching DRAMAtical murder. Or, you know, maybe you'll dig those images. Have at it, then.

Episode 3 was pretty tame, but it had issues with animations. We got first kiss for male/male.

As for the warning, it was too late for me when I was searching a better default image for the series. Safe Search won't help you either. I have it on, and it still shows eroge scenes.

YotaruVegetaon July 24, 2014 at 7:40 p.m.

@takashichea: The problems with animation were publicized; they apologized for the drop in quality, and say they will be fixed.

I wonder how far the show will go with the relationships.

takashichea moderator is online on July 24, 2014 at 7:48 p.m.

I saw it on ANN. It was interesting. As for your second question, I bet it can go as far as Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi did with its relationships, using implied sex scenes.

Marshal Victoryon July 24, 2014 at 8:05 p.m.

@YotaruVegeta: @takashichea: Oddly enuff was discussing this with a friend of mine today because of this story... An how the industry insiders claim he will be hurt for not playing that role. Which does not fit with the other roles he had lined up movie wise. So my friend an I discussed this an how it would hurt him if at all because 50 shades of grey is aimed at women.

I brought up About Yaoi an this anime an tied the two together in our discussion. Basically hes older than me seen more of the world. An least in the states hes not run in women who like Yaoi like stuff at all. I have to say its the same for my part of the woods.

Now I know on older anime you would have the girl who liked it because of the "forbidden love" aspect. Mostly in a school comedy anime. Mostly this felt like a parody of something an not as a thing or a trend.

@Marshal Victory: @YotaruVegeta:

You're right Marshal. What I should have mentioned is what demographics and region. We have the Yaoi con in California. California is one of the most liberal states out in the US and open to gay marriage. For women who love yaoi, I seen it more in Anime Vice and at Anime Expo when I visited there twice. I know one former staff member who was female and like yaoi, Gia Manry. In fact, I ask her once for yaoi recommendations when a user asked me for some because she thought I was a female user at first after seeing my name on Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi wiki page.

That's my best guess for women liking yaoi region wise.

I don't understand that line of thought. Assuming that there are more hetero/bi-sexual women than homosexual men, why would stories about dudes making out and falling in love with each other be more aimed at men than women?

whiskerson July 25, 2014 at 5:37 a.m.

@takashichea: @Marshal Victory: @YotaruVegeta:

Keep in mind that most Yaoi is filled with pretty, often effeminate boys and fluffy romance, something that would more likely appeal to girls and not gay men. You can see the difference if you compare a typical Yaoi manga with a Bara manga which depicts relationships and sex between men more realistically, unlike Yaoi which is mostly fantasy and often portrays homophobic characters.

takashichea moderator is online on July 25, 2014 at 10:50 a.m.

I put that second line and first line to contrast thoughts. Yaoi was mostly written by women for women. You got to think about their target audience. The second line was just an assumed thought for new people who never seen yaoi.

Whiskers has a better point than me. I haven't heard of Bara before.

YotaruVegetaon July 25, 2014 at 3:44 p.m.

@Marshal Victory: In this day, it wouldn't hurt his career at all. Will Smith played a gay character in, what, the 90s?

Despite the controversy with Jared Leto playing a role an actual trans woman could, Jared Leto's career will not be affected by his portrayal. In fact, he went to the Oscars because of it.

Yep! Look how far we've come.

Marshal Victoryon July 25, 2014 at 11:02 p.m.

@YotaruVegeta: Eh not sure let me search...Six Degrees of Separation 1993. So 21 years ago. An he has had rumors about him um ever since.

An it is the entertainment insiders who are saying because the true blood actor left the character that would turn bi that it would hurt his career. The argument can go the other way to Damed if ya do an damed if ya don't as a actor it seems to me these days.

Just to be clear I don't care either way. What one likes is what one likes. Life is very simple that way. Just the connection of the stories that day sparked a interesting discussion that tied into Yaoi . Just the idea that Yaoi is aimed at women seems contradictory to main stream movies aimed at them. Twilight, 50 shades of Grey etc. Thus why I say the roles the actor had lined up did not match what True Blood was planing for his character. Typecasting in Hollywood is a very real thing.

YotaruVegetaon July 26, 2014 at 7:11 a.m.

@Marshal Victory: He has more kids than me (I have 0), and two more wives (again, 0) so if people still think he's gay, then I'm flaming.

Marshal Victoryon July 26, 2014 at 12:18 p.m.

@YotaruVegeta: Bi . They think hes bi. Long rumors of it. Just search his name an gay or bi an its there. Some recent stuff to, some such about a Hollywood madam list of guys who order guys etc. Also having kids or being married does not discount that. People lead the lives they lead for their own rhyme and reasons.

Um easy example of that would be her 1st husband had 2 kids with her an turned out to be gay. Reason I know about this is I used to listen to her radio show on She also talks about it in her book. She talks about it here to.

Also see So yeah it happens. Again just to be clear. Could care less what or who one does as long as it does not affect me. Tho using some one with out them knowing like that would push them into the arse category at the very least.

YotaruVegetaon July 27, 2014 at 3:33 a.m.

@Marshal Victory: Name a hot Hollywood dude. They think he's gay. Tom Cruise. Gay. George Clooney. Gay. I haven't heard anything about Denzel, but someone, somewhere, is callin' him gay. Why? Because some people think that's the worst thing you can call a person.

Down low folk are very wacky. I get why they live a lie, but I don't think I could go as far as having kids with a woman when I'm not into women.

Marshal Victoryon July 27, 2014 at 9:34 a.m.

@YotaruVegeta: Eh yes an no. Sure the normal thing would be for that because of jealousy. Never heard of it on George Clooney an trust me I'm no defender of him. had those type of rumors about him more so after To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar but Wesley Snipes from same movie did not have those rumors. Oh speaking of that movie I know a fan of Patrick Swayze an she hates it to the point of pretending it does not exist. Why? Because it ruins for her what she thought was in her words "hot" about him.

With social media ( hate that term) now information an disinformation is at ones finger tips 24 hours a day. One would think rumors would be debunked rather quickly. But in human nature does seem to drag things away from the truth.

But with the above examples I could see wanting to avoid that as ones career is just getting started. But the reverse of that is the Hollywood insiders are saying in effect its a boon to play the bi role that True Blood actor left. Also keep in mind to the character change may not have been discussed to when he signed up to. The production side of the show seems to like to be strangers with the truth to. As in trying to trick people to be on the show etc.

YotaruVegetaon July 27, 2014 at 2:16 p.m.

@Marshal Victory: What's hotter than a man dressing as a woman? And here I thought I had finally understood women! :)

zaldaron July 27, 2014 at 6:56 p.m.

@Marshal Victory: Women likeing yaoi is like men watching lesbian porn. No it doesn't happen in the south much (where we both live) but that is because in the south women can't watch porn or talk about sex (which is silly and stupid). But if a women wants to look at a strong sexy man...why not look at two at the same time? Just like a man looking at lesbian porn to see two women at the same time. And yes any actor leaving a role because it is bi will look like he is coming off as homophobic and will have problems because of that which is a good thing. You are an actor, if you are worrying about people who are homophobic not seeing you in OTHER characters or thinking you are really bi, gay, or whatever because you played a character like that....well you are worrying about the wrong people...such idiots do not deserve being worried about. The south's obsession with purity with marriage when we have the highest rates of spousal abuse, divorce, teenage pregnancy is ridiculous.

You keep saying you are not homophobic but you really are coming off like it here. But irrelevant I suppose. I need to get back to studying for patent bar..sigh.
