DRAGON BALL Z #22 - - Watch & Learn

Ol' Vegeta sure took his sweet time to get here.

I love how the Saiyans’ cavalier nuking of an entire city is treated about as flippantly as Nappa slipping on a banana peel..

It took about 16 episodes for this particular plot thread to reach its next logical step. At this point, I can almost feel the difference between filler and meat (that’s the term for the A-material, right?) on an intrinsic level. There just seems to be more spring in all these characters’ steps, even when they’re stepping into a bunch of stuff and nonsense.

That’s appreciation by degrees, I suppose, because we’re only just at the start of a climax that’s surely going to be stretched over two or three times as many episodes as are necessary. Gohan hasn’t started crying, Goku hasn’t arrived on the scene, nobody’s leveled up yet… you all know there are many blows left to be traded in this fight.

I’ve made no secret of how my experience with the DRAGON BALL franchise, on the whole, is pretty piecemeal. I haven’t actually gone all the way through the first iteration of this show, so it’s pretty amusing to realize now that Piccolo’s Namekian heritage was another part of the mythos that Toriyama just kind-of pulled off his pocket during this catch-all retcon. It’s incredibly amusing to see how he and Kami more-or-less evolved from being this universe’s vision of Jehovah and the devil into being just another couple of aliens.

Thinking about, I suppose there’s a satirical jab at religion which can be inferred there. Let’s be honest, though - - Toriyama just tripped on his own feet. The more salient point is that this show was actually packed with plenty of similarly volatile content which FUNimation shrewdly downplayed when it came time to localize the show. If anything, this whole excursion is probably a demonstration of how translators really are best served by taking more creative liberties with the anime they license.

Watch this episode, “The Darkest Day" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

To me it depends on the audience and the content. Some anime is best served in the west in a downplayed or altered form, some isn't.

It was the right thing to do to make DBZ accessible to the widest audience possible, at the time a lot of the changes FUNimation made to the show made sense. Not all of the changes though. Even some of the staff involved (particularly the voice actors) have said multiple times how they weren't happy with some of the "creative" choices that were made back then. I personally take issue with a lot of the script, often it was just downright made up nonsense.

That's what makes Dragon Ball Z Kai so great to me. If you love Dragon Ball Z (and I still do!) then that's fine and you can watch that. But, if you want the experience raw, uncensored, and as close to the original Japanese manga as possible, Kai is a fantastic experience. Not only are the scripts a million times better, but so is the voice acting in general. Sean Schemmel, Chris Sabat, and the rest have improved so much it's amazing.

Ha, yeah. Mass murder was never taken too seriously, I guess that's what happens when there are magic crystal balls lying around that can undo it all in an instant.
