Downloading Illegal Content Now Illegal In Japan

Japan's updating its copyright laws to battle piracy. Will it be effective?

Okay, that's kind of a facetious headline, but FumiJP reports on a new amendment to Japanese copyright law that was passed on June 12th, which is set to go into effect in January.

The primary focus of the amendment is illegal downloads. The headline refers to the fact that until the amendment, only the UPloading of illegal contents (i.e. copyright-violating materials) was illegal. With the amendment, downloading them will be illegal as well. However, the amendment does note that the user has to KNOW that it was illegal content, which is difficult to prove.

Another interesting fact: until this amendment, things like Google cacheing of pages was technically illegal, because such search engine caches would have been reproducing materials that were not their own. The amendment changes that to make it legal, although I wonder exactly how they word it to ensure that only search engines are able to reproduce said materials in this fashion?

There's more information available over at Fumi Yamazaki's blog, and I recommend giving it a read-through, even if it won't apply to most of us. (Via Japanator.)

That picture is from Fate/stay night and it's Shirou, the main male character.

@kratos1010: ...And Shirou is particularly infamous for a particular line: "People DIE when they are killed!"

So I thought this was appropriate ;)

@gia: Yeah, yeah, you guys can poke fun at Shirou all you want for his statement, though it's really the translators fault of that fansub since a more connotative translation of the line that came from is "People die when they are slain". Regardless though, it's a fun meme.

Personally I think this one is more fitting:

@HeeroYuy: Why would you try to ruin a perfectly good meme like that?

America-hater.

Because I'm one of the few people who finds Shirou to be somewhat badass, even if he's not always a shining example of brilliance. And if it's any compensation, plenty of other people have done it too:

Deacon_Sephirothon June 16, 2009 at 6:50 a.m.
Well from those screenshots he seems to be in the minority. He holds the belief that people DIE when you kill them, whereas everyone else seems doubtful or even sure of the very opposite.
lanaswifton June 16, 2009 at 2:10 p.m.
@HeeroYuy: That's exactly the point, though. That meme isn't ABOUT Shirou being a loser or an idiot, it's about a funny and bad translation-- or more likely, a difficult-to-translate Japanese idiom.

By personalizing it as some kind of campaign against Shirou and/or Fate/Stay Night and self-righteously arguing about it, all you're accomplishing is raining on other peoples' LULZ parade, to no effect other than making an amusing thread less amusing.

GG!
HeeroYuyon June 16, 2009 at 5:37 p.m.
@lanaswift: ....

First off I said I like the joke; Second, the meme IS part of a series that try to say that Shirou's an idiot. If you don't believe me then look up "I don't get it" on the lurkmoar wiki. Heck, how many times has someone made one stupid comment about a character and then next thing you know there's a whole damn flame war? It's happened several times here on this site even, so pardon me if I want to say something calmly and nicely to the contrary instead of in hotbloodedness. I was even being quite proper and nice in my original statement. I really don't see why it warranted such a harsh response. (referring to this second comment - your first was fine)

Regardless, the topic is somewhat serious, even if it's intro was supposed to be comical, so ultimately the only ones making it into a whole "boo!! funsucker!!!" are you and Deacon. Excellent job perpetuating it!
lanaswifton June 16, 2009 at 8:44 p.m.
@HeeroYuy: So, if a topic is serious, everything in the comments needs be serious also? C'mon. That said, I don't care if Shirou is an idiot or not, I found the whole show pretty meh. And I don't think anyone here was making a big "zomg Shirou is an idiot!" deal that needed to be corrected, either. Instead, the conversation reads sort of like you were responding to a light-hearted joke by thinking it was your responsibility to teach all us clueless otaku that Shirou is not, in fact, an idiot.

That said, if you thought my response comment was "harsh," it wasnt intended to be. You responded, and I responded back, carrying on what was intended to be a light debate on a meme, not any kind of personal attack or violation.

I hope that this incredibly serious comment correctly addresses and dispels any of your concerns with my sense of debate and humo-- err, "hotbloodedness." You will also be hearing from my lawyer re: your characterization of myself as someone who would ever use multiple exclamation points. (...Err, sorry. It was that hotbloodedness again. I wonder if they make a pill for that.)

Fate/Stay Night and animu memes be wikkid srs bznz, yo.

I actually wasn't commenting on ANY of that.
I was just making a joke... sorry it went over your head

NOW you are sucking the fun out.
