Doujinshi Shops are Recession-Proof?

Toranoana plans on expansion in troubled times.

So, we all know that doujinshi-- the amateur-published comics that are the focus of the world's biggest comics convention, Comic Market –are pretty popular. But are they recession-proof? Apparently so, according to Hirotaka Yoshida, president of Toranoana, a major chain of doujinshi retail shops.

In a recent interview, Yoshida revealed that in the midst of everyone else restructuring and cutting back, Toranoana's strategy is to keep on growing. They're planning on new stores in Akihabara, and they're also turning their attentions outside of Akihabara-- possibly even the foreign market. That's, y'know, us.

Now, given that doujinshi usually retail for about ¥500-1000 (about $5.50 to $11 USD) in Japan, and imported copies in the States usually run $15-20, I would love to see a bit more competition to drive those prices down a bit. So...go, Toranoana, go!
