I think Summer Wars mixed CG and 2D pretty nicely, But I agree, as always it all comes down to execution. And I definitely don't think all anime are required to shove CG stuff into the frame just because they can.

Good example of a new series thats struggled with computer animations (cgi) is Tokyo Ravens . Early on the cgi was all about the summoned crtitters. An later on they did a much bettter job with the cgi so that it did not distract as much.

Another series http://www.animevice.com/freezing-vibration/11-6638/ helecopter at the start of the series looked worse than the jump jet in X-Com enemy unkown. So basicly if you do cgi make it look at least as good as video games

It's getting better. Black Rock Shooter did it well. It will get better as time goes on. There's not good alternative that still fits in with them doing it for budgetary reasons. Gunslinger Girl 2 has cars that are non CG and they are god awful looking. They were actually worse than CG ones. Anime is really a bunch of still images but they make it in a way were it doesn't feel like a bunch of still images. These cars looked like someone took a cutout and was moving it across the screen. CG would have been much better.

I remember Arpeggio of Blue Steel's CG was awkward to get used. When you had manga iconography with CG, it looks weird. The animation looks stiff. Mixing CG with drawing looks weird. Princess Mononoke, Avatar, and maybe Samurai Seven did it well. Arpeggio and Unbreakable Machine Doll has some issues with CG and mixing.

American cartoons seem to get the CG better than anime because they're all in CG (IE: the new TMNT series and the Green Lantern series on Cartoon Network). Xiaolin Chronicles CG had suffer from slow frame rate.

Preferably, I'd say "no", but some series manage to pull the 3D animation aspect off.
