Wow so you could really beat the shit out of someone if it came down to it, Tom? I always noticed you were way more brolic than the standard anime fan but I never knew you did MMA for a while.
Cool vid. I've connected with anime before but the one I remember most is Shinji's relationship with his Dad in Evangelion. My and my pops were going through it at the time and I could totally get where Shinji was coming from in that regard.
The one anime power I would want to have is Aizen's. I've long thought about what I would do with it and the general plan is to hit like 20 banks in one day where I just walk in wearing a mask, get everyone's attention, unsheathe my sword (which lets him create complex fictional sensory info to anyone who saw it being unsheathed) and then making fake me run out while real me robs the place but creates an illusion that it's business as usual. Sam's wish for teleportation would be pretty awesome as well, although I'd want it to make the Bleach teleport sound as being able to do that on the fly is half of the fun.
Hmm, I believe the first time I got connected to an anime was in Digimon Adventure. It was with Izzy with his adopted parents, that about all I'll say about that.
One of the anime/manga I enjoy are adventures titles (like One Piece, Slayers and Digimon), they usually cheer me up

When I was really young, I remember a certain scene in Digimon Tamersreally freaking me out, to the point of having nightmares for a couple of days. That entire series, written by Chiaki J. Konaka, honestly didn't seem targeted towards children, regardless of watching the Japanese or the English dub.
But yeah, the anime that I've mostly connected with is Evangelion. It truly allowed me to take more anime beyond face value.
First time and( currently) only time I've ever connected with an anime was Berserk, when
Gutsu
was walking away and for the first time Casca noticed the man behind the bronze lets just say it spoke to me on levels I never thought an anime could reach(at least for me).
Woo got a few of my questions asked! Thanks guys! The whole escapism bit went a different route than I expected, but I liked your responses either way. Before you guys ask, no I don't have extreme issues or problems in life or whatever. Just to uh, get that out of the way, I guess.
But anyways, other than some moments like Shinji's state of mind in Evangelion, only one show comes to mind at the moment that I've connected with to a certain extent, and it was School Rumble. Say what you will about the over-the-top comedy moments, some of the romance stuff, but I feel a lot of the crazy things that went on in that show summed up my high school experience in a nutshell. Lots of wacky moments with fellow classmates, ups and downs, crushes, misunderstandings, etc. I know it sounds dumb that I would connect in a show like that, but hey.
I wrestled in high school as well, and Tom's experience with the sport is similar to mine. I didn't like wrestling at first either, despite people urging me to go through with it; I just wanted to get in shape, that's all. Not counting freshman year (which I only won a single match), I did well and grew to like it.
I think the huge difference between Poke and Digi monsters, as I call them, is the Poke-monsters seem to outgrow it, the anime remains steadily childish, and the games stop being challenging so they walk away from the game/anime after a time, Digimon fans do not seem to follow the same path, they seem to be lifer fans, and who really knows why? The anime is a little better written then Pokemon, but with a worse game, who knows, this is one of the anime paradox moments.
The most engrossing will always be the most relate-able. I love mecha. Strike up a conversation with me about Gundam and I'll talk your ear off. But it lacks the same degree of life penetration that more subdued shows have managed to pull off. Honey & Clover sent me on long enough of a self-introspection trip that I set my thoughts on anime to paper for the first time while Usagi Drops was my gift to my parents for their wedding anniversary as a thank you for raising me. Maybe I'm just a sucker for well done internal monologue, but I'm alright with that too.
