has always been a funny manga company in terms of their catalogue. The majority of their titles are major fan-favorites like xxxHOLiC
and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle
, Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei
, and Mushishi
. But they've got a growing chunk of home-grown series based on major western franchises, starting with the Avril Lavigne manga Make 5 Wishes, continuing with the Dean Koontz-based In Odd We Trust
, Cartoon Network's Ben 10 Alien Force, and most recently, the two X-Men manga series (Wolverine: Prodigal Son and X-Men: Misfits). It's kind of like TOKYOPOP
, but with bigger names and different licensed-to-original ratios. (Tpop seems to devote more of its time to the original works.)
The latest in this series of original works
is another Cartoon Network title called Secret Saturdays
, and I feel old because unlike Ben 10, I hadn't even heard of this show. Although in my defense, it only started up in October. Apparently it's heavily influenced by the old Hannah Barbera classics like Jonny Quest, and probably not in the same way that, say, Venture Bros. is.
The series revolves around a family, Doc and Drew Saturday and their son Zak, who are part of a secret organization hiding the existence of creatures known as cryptids-- and other terrifying and supernatural things. It sounds kinda cute, but I never got around to watching Ben 10 either. Any of you guys care to chime in?
