DEADMAN WONDERLAND #7 -- Watch & Learn

This son of a bitch will snatch your pudding away from you.

I’m starting to wonder if the excessive-and-literal darkness covering so much of this show might be there as some sort of plotting blanket to cover up the gaps where Ganta’s getting from Point A to Points B and C. Like, Deadman Wonderland is supposed to be this quadruple-max prison, right? Wouldn’t the guards be escorting, following and otherwise observing Ganta where ever he goes, at all times? Yet there have been a handful of scenes recently where the kid just kind of wanders into the vicinity of whoever’s time in the story has come up.

A couple episodes back, we had his sort-of random meet-cute with “Hummingbird.” In this episode, it’s him just randomly turning up in the same bar that the resistance is stocked up in. I honestly don’t get that hung up about plot holes, in general - - especially for a show where executioner’s theme park is still allowed to operate by law - - but these are just somehow more noticeable.

Anyway, I’m kind-of starting to think that the dub of this show might be even be more enjoyable - - because there are just an unnatural concentration of awesomely-quotable cult movie lines here. The head of security’s whole mixing of hunting metaphors, the Super Monk’s righteous monologues, Shiro’s assorted psycho-sing-songs… all of them would sound about five times more over-the-top in English. Shit, there’d be probably be some absurd drinking game for it (shots for every time Shiro says “Kishi” or whatever, right?)

And Shiro’s supposed to be… like… Ganta’s demented albino Peppermint Patty now, or something? I haven’t figured out if these flashbacks are supposed to be memory implants or hallucinations, but they have painted the picture of the most deranged junior bodyguard. I’ll have a hard time ever forgetting the part where she moon-stomps that diabolical, pudding-snatching dog, that's for sure. YEESH.

Watch this episode, “Wretched Egg” below and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

I don't see why the guards have to watch\fallow Ganta's every move when he's been poison and the only antidote is the candy he buys by fighting in death matches.

This is no normal prison. It's a prison filled with superhuman criminals who are put on display for the nation to watch, so criminals walking around free isn't that stunning to me. Even though the inmates can make trouble, the warden has things under control, more or less. Like you've seen, they've got dudes like the Rock N' Roll Monk.

In the US dub version, Shiro never does the "kishi" laugh. That's one of my biggest problems with the dub. It's that unique laugh that helps you identify the Wretched Egg, and you have that awesome reveal when she first does it. The sense of realization is just gone from that scene, and that's disappointing. I really loved that moment when I first saw it.

I'm not a really big fan of the dub on this series. Most of the cast does pretty well, but Greg Ayres as Ganta just doesn't really play well. I like most of his work, but in this he's really playing up the cracked voice boy to sound younger. It could just be that I'm holding him in comparison to Romi Park.

I always found it odd that these super max prisoners are allowed to roam the grounds as they see fit. Male and female prisoners interact on a regular basis and there is actually a fully stocked bar that the inmates have built. I can understand some toilet wine but there being an actual bar? A hidden bar on top of that.

I wasn't taking the show all that serious considering it's a series where prisoners dress up in clown suits and parade around then participate in the Running Man with a girl wearing a Dreamcast logo spandex suit, but still, this seemed more outlandish than usual.

Dude, the ubermonk, completely and irredeemably twisted as he is, steals the show in every scene he's in.
