The plan was to change things up with the W&L format and alternate between two sets of shows every other week. That is, we’d cover YU YU HAKUSHO and EUREKA SEVEN for an interval, then switch DARKER THAN BLACK and DIRTY PAIR for the next patch. At the moment, it’s probably going to shake out more like a roulette wheel, since I got another shipment of DVDs from Funi that need some write-ups of their own. So keep your wits about you - - things are going to be a little unpredictable for the moment.
Anyway, as I mentioned in my post about DARKER THAN BLACK Season 2, I’ve decided to pick up Season 1 again, about a year after having to walk away from it due to lack of (legal) online streaming options. Amusingly enough, I didn’t feel like I had any catching up to do, because I was immediately reappraised of how hit-or-miss these two-episode arcs are. Maybe that speaks to the strength of this anthology’s variety but, nevertheless, I was bored by this plain jane detective girl every time the show focused on her the last time and, here I am, bored by her again. Well, most of the time anyway.
I had a discussion with you lunatics last time about how comparing specific Contractors to specific X-Men was probably unavoidable since there are only so many worthwhile variations you can do on super-powers. That’s still mostly true, but I’ll say that the bodyguard’s freaky “flesh swap” gimmick in this one was genuinely novel. Maybe it sounds a little overly impatient to ask that more of this episode centered on him instead of the rather slow-in-the-going intrigue about the mob heiress’ backstory. However, the latter portion’s built on such a hokey coincidence - - “Oh, I just happened to forget that you were having your birthday at this restaurant!" - - that it’s never really able to shake off.
I get the feeling that I won’t like the second part of this, but I’ll like the next arc. The numerology works out like even-numbered STAR TREK flicks!
