Last year, when we kept running into one show after another with a scissor fetish, Sam speculated that there might be some powerful Japanese blogger influencing the premises of anime shows. If such a ‘Blogger Zero’ exists, he or she must’ve been idly flipping through history books lately, because this is the fourth in as many shows I’ve seen recently watched which interjects mecha into feudal times.
It’s also yet another show starring a socially awkward pervert who freaks out at the mere thought of bewbs… but… somehow… it actually that make interesting?
For the most part, these plays like a less sophisticated SAMURAI CHAMPLOO. The novelty of swordsmen running around with pompadours and Mohawks is amusing, certainly - - and it’s a pretty show, to be sure - - but it’s almost like the crew go bored with seeing that conceit through and just opted to drop mechs in it because… well, just because. The T&A gets tiresome. And there’s a lot of it. It’s not hot. It’s not funny. At least initially, anyway.
The show might actually have a brilliant hook for subverting the nebbish creep we keep meeting in these shows. You want to know why he goes to such grotesque lengths to demonstrate how girl crazy he is? Because he’s never actually been with a girl.
But wait - - that’s exactly the point. The messianic mech will only work if he’s a virgin. Now, we’re on to something here. I can imagine plenty of great sitcom dilemmas unfolding in later episodes where this guy might earn some renown and attention - - and be forced to match his bite to his bark - - only for him to have to brush off the girls lest he lose his power. That’s a great set-up.
I guess I wish the show didn’t make fake me out for so long, but that’s the point of the switcheroo. Whether you like this pilot or not will depend on how long you can deal with your… * AHEM *… leg getting pulled.
Watch "Succession Strife! Keiichiro Appears!" and decide for yourself.
