DAI-SHOGUN -- GREAT REVOLUTION #1 -- Special Review

The anachronistic mech to finally redeem the pervert trope?

Join us as we view new pilots this season. See where they fit on the highly-scientific Rock-or-Suck Scale…

Last year, when we kept running into one show after another with a scissor fetish, Sam speculated that there might be some powerful Japanese blogger influencing the premises of anime shows. If such a ‘Blogger Zero’ exists, he or she must’ve been idly flipping through history books lately, because this is the fourth in as many shows I’ve seen recently watched which interjects mecha into feudal times.

It’s also yet another show starring a socially awkward pervert who freaks out at the mere thought of bewbs… but… somehow… it actually that make interesting?

For the most part, these plays like a less sophisticated SAMURAI CHAMPLOO. The novelty of swordsmen running around with pompadours and Mohawks is amusing, certainly - - and it’s a pretty show, to be sure - - but it’s almost like the crew go bored with seeing that conceit through and just opted to drop mechs in it because… well, just because. The T&A gets tiresome. And there’s a lot of it. It’s not hot. It’s not funny. At least initially, anyway.

The show might actually have a brilliant hook for subverting the nebbish creep we keep meeting in these shows. You want to know why he goes to such grotesque lengths to demonstrate how girl crazy he is? Because he’s never actually been with a girl.

But wait - - that’s exactly the point. The messianic mech will only work if he’s a virgin. Now, we’re on to something here. I can imagine plenty of great sitcom dilemmas unfolding in later episodes where this guy might earn some renown and attention - - and be forced to match his bite to his bark - - only for him to have to brush off the girls lest he lose his power. That’s a great set-up.

I guess I wish the show didn’t make fake me out for so long, but that’s the point of the switcheroo. Whether you like this pilot or not will depend on how long you can deal with your… * AHEM *… leg getting pulled.

We watch a ton of virgins in anime all the time. Usually, they aren't exposed as such, but that's who we're watching in harem shows and the like.

If virginity-as-advantage is all this show has going for it, I pass. It's already a lame season, and this is basically at the bottom of my list.

"The T&A gets tiresome." I do not know how to respond to that.

But I digress the show does have some charm but its hurt more by the stop motion animation than the virgin harem aspect. Which is a odd almost new harem type. It does have a demonic mech , Granny ninja , Bath house that can be rebuilt in a day, an a virgin harem an a serial sex killer!

Yes its a odd show. Its not classical music but at least its not the auto tune crap either. It may be the Bay Watch of historical based virgin harem super powered demonic mech anime! Not great but watchable for a laugh.

I get tired of shows with excessive T and A fan service. I do tolerate fan service, but there is a limit for me, personally. Some shows nail it better and balance with a good mix of characters or story. For this show, I got tired of it quickly. Comic Artist was more entertaining than this show despite its unfortunate implication of sexual harassment at work. One of the things that was strange was the animation. I thought the computer was slowing down because the animation is slow.

'Fan service' is just doublespeak for 'T&A' though.

Oh thanks, Tom. I'll keep it in mind.

@Marshal Victory: I love how the show with what sounds like an interesting set up that might lead to actual character conflict and has a potential for creativity - since he has to stay a virgin to stay the hero - is the show you don't like.....

sigh...

and we wonder Tom why all the anime shows are always all the same. Try something new...and no one watches it.

Will have to see if I can sit through the leg pulling on this one just to support actual creativity.

@zaldar:

Different Strokes for Different Folks. Like I said, Tom won't cover every show in the Spring 2014 Anime Guide. My teammates and I create discussion threads where you could join us. Or you can post a blog if you like. It's up to you. I'm still grateful we get front news because it attracts foot traffic.

I found a worse show that has no plot compared to this show, Daimidaler: Prince vs. Penguin Empire.

@zaldar: This is interesting as no where did i say I didn't like the show. Now I don't love it But its a interesting watch but my biggest gripe with the show is the motion comic animation at times. See animation can bring down a intresting story just as good animation can bring up average story.

Tho I did make fun of some of its aspects I mean dude Granny Ninja! Which by the way was a old anime trope rarely used the last few years. The big twist on the show is virgin harem. Not that hes a virgin to keep his powers thats not even a minor plot line. But becomes a major running joke. As he does not want that mech power but he breaks out in hives when in contact with girls so ya its complicated.

@takashichea: Daimidaler: Prince vs. Penguin Empire is like a b movie parody of a popular movie. Thats not always good or watchable. Which oddly enuff fits the show as a tag line. I mean if forward tail penguin penis jokes are funny the 10th time you hear it then this is high comedy. Most of the fans of the manga seem to hate the show an all of the fans of High School DxD are mad they did this rather than a 3rd season of DxD. Have to wonder how cheep they picked up the rights to it... an why. Tho it did have some hype to the show before it came out.
