Community Spotlight - The Wiki is BOOMING

Too much stuff happened this week! Let's recall!

Welcome, Anime Vice Community! The weekend is just starting and so is the Community Spotlight. I've been able to share some great editorials with you all this week. I'm talking about my Naruto Finale discussion and the odd possibility that Naoto Shiragane could be missing from the Persona 4 anime. They're both great discussions, and I'm always happy to see the users really engage each other. I hope to bring even more to you next week. I hope you are keeping up with Tom' s Watch & Learn series. On top of Claymore, he's recently added the Tiger & Bunny series. Try not to be too sad, but don't expect any articles for Naruto, BLEACH, or One Piecethis week from GodLen. Shonen Jump isn't being published this week. There are no chapters to talk about.

While strictly not "Anime Vice" related. The perpetual puppy-lover, Matt Rorie, over on Screened.com spotlighted the Miyazaki classic, My Neighbor Totoro. Be sure to check it out his thoughtful analysis.

Wonderful Wikis

The wiki really has been blowing up and users are really starting to submit a lot of great work. Sometimes it almost seems as if it's too much, but that's a nice dilemma to have. I've started working on the Persona 4 series to get the wiki ready for the anime, and Waleshas been a big help getting it all together. Expect to see some Persona based Wiki Tasks soon.

Blog-o-sphere

Blogs are busier this week, and I did notice some new users posting. Always nice to see some new content, and that some seem excited at the idea of editing the wiki. We should all be sure to try and browse through the blog now and again to greet the new arrivals. I know some don't like how crass some of the other communities can be. The best way to fight that is to be as open and welcoming as possible. Think of it this way, we're the Senpai to these underclassmen, and should try to help them adjust.

I can't stress how important that is because it might just be lost in my Inbox when I clear it. Even if you have worked on something yourself and are really proud of your work. Another great AV Community Spotlight, FoxxFireArt! Congrats to all of the AV users who's work or efforts in the Wiki or Blogs were noted in this week's AV Spotlight!

Wow the wiki is doing well! good to know :D

Speaking of the wiki. I recently went back to Blogspot due to being sick of the annoying towards about this community. And I recently copied the contents of the Golden Bat page and made it in to a new blog. Since I wrote that whole page any way :)

I feel like I've been neglecting you Anime Vice. Well just two weeks then I lose my summer job and I can write up my reviews that I have notes for. Here is a note I found under no show title;

Male ver would be sun exploding to infinite pieces which also explode (Repeat 2X)

Good job everyone! I'm looking at tackling some Wiki work myself so maybe I'll join the fray.

@damswedon
Got no idea. You write weird notes. lol

@sotyfan16
Love to see your work.

Whoo! Yeah! Congrats everyone and especially to Wales!  Looks like a few got cut off, but no worries. They know that I reported their work.

Speaking of Senpai, I think I'm one to two new wiki editors these past weeks. Love to answer their questions. One day, they will surpass me in wiki editing. I'll be like "Aw, they all grow up to become fine Anime Vice editors."
It's was a busy week. The mood on Anime Vice is like a pendulum from sad to happy.
Thank you, FoxxFireArt for this lovely spotlight.

Thanks. I'm looking at Needless and Canaan. Their Franchise, Series, Characters, etc. need work.

I think one of the best things we did this year was adopt a wiki style guide. It's really help organize pages and give people direction on what sort of stuff might be missing.

@Halberdierv2: @AURON570:

No, it was teamwork! Feel free to add images that I found to the plot summaries to make it look beautiful.

@ethan:

Definitely! A few, new wiki editors asked me a lot about the wiki style. It was awesome. Sometimes, when I can't answer it 100%, I tell them to ask my teammates and FoxxFireArt.

FoxxFireArt moderator on Aug. 12, 2011 at 2:33 p.m.

@AURON570:

He was named Souji Seta for the manga since the character needed a name. In the game, users could just make up whatever name they wanted. For some reason, the anime version is giving him a different name. Weird, considering they are both pretty much being developed by the same distributor.

@ethan:

I find it so odd that just little things I was doing on my own became adopted by other users to the point they became part of the guide. I sort of took the Comic Vine guide and tweaked it for things like character pages.

I've pretty well handled the franchise pages for One Piece, BLEACH, Black Lagoon, Panty & Stocking, and Highschool of the Dead. Naruto's needs a little work in the movies. I may make a task or do that myself this weekend. I'd put the detail on these pages up against wikipedia any day.

I was actually looking in some of the Comic Vine wiki tasks for kicks. I was actually rather shocked at how little detail there was in Superman's profile. Not that there isn't a lot written on there. It's just that his Other Media sections are larger than his actual comic events. His Major Story Arcs is pretty much four paragraphs.

@takashichea:

If anyone wants to thank me. They can go to a busy anime forum and display their wiki and blog work to invite more users to join the community, or pester Ethan with PMs that he should hire me as a regular writer. Either/Or =D lol (And yes. I do know he's linked to this PM.)

Waleson Aug. 12, 2011 at 6:39 p.m.
It's awesome all the work that everyone has done in the past week. One thing caught my eye though: why was Shonen Jump canceled this week? I don't read Naruto or the big names but I am wondering when I'll get to see the next issues of Bakuman and Fairy Tail.
FoxxFireArt moderator on Aug. 12, 2011 at 8:31 p.m.

@Wales:

It wasn't canceled. Every few weeks in the year it takes breaks. Sometimes during special national holidays.

EganTheVile1on Aug. 12, 2011 at 9:08 p.m.
I am so happy to see more wiki editors hard at work, and the veteran ones continuing in their efforts, great work and keep it up one and all!

you're welcome, lol

seriously, good works guys and remember to support the pages by clicking the +1 or like button on each page

@buhssuht:

It also helps to go to some outside forum sites for anime and manga to promote both the site and users' work. Hopefully, they will be interested enough to join when they see all the options available, and the amount of information to be fond.

Back in January I removed alot of what was written in the Superman page. And then I applied the Comic Vine Wiki Style guide to the page. Many of our popular character pages had become unreadable over time. I could not even get people to fix the page for grammar and readability because people naturally don't want to remove other people's work even if it's detremental to the site. So I removed it to make way for better writing.

Also, on CV we want users to put only a paragraph about a Story Arc on a character page. More detailed written should end up on the actual Story Arc page.

takashichea moderator is online on Aug. 15, 2011 at 5:26 p.m.

@ethan:

I feel the same way about the Yoh Asakura's page. I just want to delete the whole story arcs and redo it. Since time is very scarce, I have to streamline it.

About 3 months ago, I was contemplating whether a plot summary should be long or short and if mine are too long. Throughout this time, I learn from FoxxFireArt and others to do a short plot summary (one sentence or three) and then do a full plot summary.

This spotlight page marks the emphasis on episode plot summaries and the shift from character pages to episode pages.

I remember FoxxFireArt asking about streamlining. I think I know what it looks like.

Example of Streamlining

Along with the sword comes a new ally and another piece of Amidamaru's mysterious past. Yoh and Manta meet Mosuke, the swords smith who created Harusame, and Amidamaru's best friend. The two listen to the connection and how the sword will set Amidamaru in motion. Yoh integrates himself with Mosuke's soul and the two of them begin working and repairing Harusame. After a long night of toil and hard work Yoh brings the Harusame to Amidamaru and gives him a message from Mosuke. Feeling a deep sense of gratitude towards Yoh Amidamaru joins him finally in his quest to be Shaman King. (Volume 1)

At every end of the paragraph or two, add the volume or episode link.

Since most wiki editors are working episode plot summaries, it will make life easier by just streamlining the character page without having to write from scratch or from the plot summary

@FoxxFireArt:

I don't want to offend you, but I feel it is more effective to maintain our community and keep them from leaving because we losing more people than we getting new ones. I don't have the stats. Last semester (Spring 2011), I lost two of my team members without communication or a good bye. It's a shame that we are losing potential wiki editors/posters/rpgers.
