Coming Soon: Jormungand

When exactly will these arms dealers reach a black market near you? Your guess is as good as ours.

Coming to a war-torn country near you!

We as anime and manga fans love it when the manga we like to read get an anime adaptation. It sometimes isn’t the one we really want but we enjoy what we get. That is what I want to talk about today.

The preview lists of the next season’s anime line-up are great to see but what about when you don’t know when an anime will air but you know it’s coming? That’s how I feel about the Jormungand anime. The news came up about 2 or 3 months ago that the anime based on Keitaro Takahashi’s manga about a group of arms dealers will be airing soon. There is no date that I know of but I feel safe in saying it will be in the Spring or Summer season.

Many of you probably don’t know much about the manga but you can easily change that as Viz Media publishes the manga and 8 volumes are out right now. The manga ended in Japan last month after running since 2006-but that’s neither here nor there. What interests me is who is working on the anime. The anime is being done by WHITE FOX (Katanagatari and Steins;Gate) with Keitaro Motonaga (Katanagatari, School Days, Getbackers) directing, Yousuke Kuroda (Mobile Suit Gundam 00) writing the script, Taku Iwasaki (Gurren Lagann) composing the score, and Kazuhisa Nakamaru (Katanagatari and Steins;Gate) doing the character design. These mentionable people have worked on some well-known projects and there are some notable voice actors as well; all of which makes me feel exited to see the manga come to life.

The story follows Koko Hekmatyar, an arms dealer, and her crew, a various group of military veterans specializing in tactics, information, weapons, blades, etc. traversing the world doing what they do best: make money through war. But the oddball of the group is a generally emotionless boy named Jonah, who ironically hates guns and arms dealers but uses them to find those responsible for killing his family.

Sounds pretty serious, right? Well, the mood is actually a bit on the light side. There is struggle and hardship but the characters persevere and have a few laughs along the way. I enjoy the mixture of light-heartedness in what is usually a cut-and-dry serious genre. I have a few volumes of the manga but I’m missing some so I’ve only read through volume 2 but the art style is interesting and I feel the animation does a nice job bringing things to life while still being more detailed. But I’ll let you Vicers decide for yourself with thispromo from the anime’s official site (the top video).

So what do y’all think?! Will you give this manga or anime a try? What upcoming anime are you excited about? Let the community know in the comments!

EDIT: I'm sorry about the video in the link to the website not working, Vicers. It was the other day. To make up for it I have the link to the ANN article that includes the promo.

Katanagatari/Stein;Gate quality animation and art + Gundam 00 quality script filtered through the steady eyes of the the person that made Katanagatari/School Days (two of my favorites) = a win. This show is now on my radar.

Strangely enough, it's because I stumbled across this entry on one of the "preview" charts that I decided to skim through a couple early volumes of the manga. It inspired me to fill out a few wiki entries for the series on the site. I'm looking forward to this adaptation.

Also, technically Jonah already knows who is responsible for his parents' death, but unfortunately he isn't allowed to kill him for a couple reasons I won't spoil here (read Vol 3 of the manga to find that out).
