CHOBITS #1 - - Special Review

A harem show repressed about its own sexual repression?

CHOBITS is another one of those series that’s left plenty of lasting impressions in anime fandom without necessarily maintaining an active presence. Its name has come up enough times that I feel like it was a bit controversial when it first aired - - but I can’t tell which side of the ROCK/SUCK scale that controversy leaned to.

I want to be nice and just throw my hands up, saying, “This just isn’t for me.” But this is a commentary column, after all, so I’m pretty well obliged to say something qualitative.

Well… if there ever were a show that seemed more-or-less designed for group viewings at cons or clubs, then this would be it. If I saw this with a bunch of other people, the ribald slapstick about inconvenient nosebleeds, vaginal power switches and bumpkins eagerly looking forward to internet porn might play a little funnier.

Watching it alone, on my laptop, in my dark office, however? I can say that not one of these gags connected. More so, the sex humor seemed to be on the order of some awful 80’s sitcom where even the word “sexy” would be taboo enough to get some “Ooooooooooh’s” out of the audience.

Maybe CHOBITS is just missing a laugh track, then? Out of all the harem I’ve watched (or whatever you want to call these shows about neebish dudes constantly kvetching over the hotties that’ve literally dropped into their lives), this honestly has the least going for it. Even something like TENCHI - - which isn’t that great, anyway - - still feels like it’s got a mess of lunacy of layered on its sexual repression.

CHOBITS feels like it cut that craziness off like crust off of some much white bread, leaving us with next-to-nothing to even taste. And yes, that’s how I really feel.

Watch this episode, "Chi Awakens" here and decide for yourself.

I guess you'd call them "wish fulfillment shows." One thing you can say for Chobits is that they don't open up the girl archetype closet and throw tons of lame characters at you.

If you keep watching this. I hope you like to hear "Chi" a lot.

I actually like what I've seen of it so far..though I haven't really finished it yet...I'll get around to it...eventually, probably.

It shows a lot of potential for us young adults who starting out in college and city life as well as finding love...in a sci-fy comedy/drama kind of way.

"Chobits" really SUCKS with it's grade school humor and generic animation, I hate it for more or less the same reasons' I hated "Elfen Lied", I say watch "Key the Metal Idol" instead but that's just my opinion,

Nyu, Nyu, Nyu Chi, Chi, Chi, ugh....why must they repeat there names' like Poke'moe'

I'm pretty sure Tom that this isn't a harem show. You'll need more girls that have an interest in the main male character to be a harem show. Anyway, this was more of a relic of past anime and the way society in Japan was kinda going with Young males failing to date or fall in love.

I finished this show a while ago after having it on hold for a few years. It doesn't hold up as well as I expected. And it gets a bit creepier as it goes on. Can't blame you for not liking it too much, Tom.

I hate shows like Chobits and try to avoid them like the plague. However, with Netfilx's constant instance on me watching it I bit the bullet and.......... it's not bad, not bad at all, and for someone like me that's a really weird thing to say(It's also one of those shows I rather not publicly admit to watching, or even liking for that matter lol).

I like how the show gets really dark in some of it's themes and ideas, but the whole "aww look, she has panties on her head" thing is far more embarrassing for the viewer than endearing(and there's a heck-of-alot of that to shovel through for the good bits). Not to mention the contrast between the professor and the main character is by far the best thing the show has going for it(really the shows saving grace, imo of course)

Regardless, it certainly opened me to far more genres of film in general

In the future expensive robots called Persocoms can be bought. Hideki is a poor prep-school student and can't afford a Persocom. One day he comes across an exceptionally cute Persocom in the trash. Why would anyone throw away something as expensive and amazing as a Persocom?
