Anime/Manga News, Stories and Updates
So while I've been chugging away here in hot Houston, Anime Vice intern Eric has been putting forth effort on Vice readers' behalf at Sakura Con in not-so-sunny Seattle! Here are his notes from the FUNimation and Dark Horse panels, including Dark Horse's announcement of a new Blade of the Immortal manga (!). Warning: it's a little long!

Make sure you thank Eric in the comments for doing such an awesome job-- he even took down all the release dates!
FUNimation Panel:
Surprises:
1) Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (Japanese with English subtitles) new episodes every Thursday at 10:00 am central on FUNimation.com; the first one is out now. (Note: I dunno why they said this was a suprise.) Other: The original Japanese episodes premier every Sunday, and FUNimation has a 4-day turnaround on the subtitles.

2) The Fullmetal Alchemist 4-episode OVA is coming out "soon," will include lots of extras like animated & live action shorts, DVD bonus material, etc.

General Information:
They expect 17% growth in 2009 with more new releases and expanded free online streaming of shows on their own website as well as Youtube, Hulu, Joost, Veoh, and Gaia. As part of this plan, Romeo X Juliet is set to debut soon on FUNimation's site before it comes out on DVD.

They plan on entering some of their full-length anime features into national film festivals.

List of Anime Release Dates:
Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple Season 1 episodes 1-13: June 16th
Shigurui Death Frenzy 12-episode DVD & Bluray: available now

Shin Chan Season 2 part 2 (13 episodes): May 12th

Romeo x Juliet complete series part 1 (episodes 1-13): June 23. 2 kinds of boxes, one a "Romeo" theme, one a "Juliet" theme. Note: Part 1 will be online before it's out on DVD. Part 2 is coming in September or October.

Kaze no Stigma complete series part 1 (episodes 1-12): June 30th
One Piece Season 2 part 1 (episodes 54-66): June 30th

Tons of Box Sets being released between now and June, some notable ones are Fruits Basket, Tenchi & Dragonball Z.

Dark Horse Comics Panel:
New Blade of the Immortal: Legend of the Sword Fiend manga announced, the title isn't firm. It's a retelling of the first 3 or 4 collections with a new character added.

Rumor about the new Hellsing manga - apparently it's been seen around the Dark Horse offices, and may be coming out "soon." (Dunno what "soon" means though.)

Passed around previews of some stuff:
Japanese copies of Little Red Riding Hood & Alice in Wonderland by POP (art) & Michiyo Hayano (story), part of the POP Wonderland series. No release date announced yet.
CLAMP's Clover omnibus edition (June 10th)
Oh My Goddess! Colors (April 29th)
Samples of Yoshitaka Amano's illustrations for Shinjuku (No solid date, said "Summer 2009")

Talked about some current & upcoming releases:
Blood+ vol. 4 and Blood+ Adagio 1 & 2 (July 29th, May 26th, and unknown,  respectively)
Shaman Warrior #7 (June 3rd, 1st edition available online free at darkhorse.com)

Thank you Eric (wherever you may be)! :)

I'm excited for the FMA OVA. I also want to check out Romeo X Juliet so I'm happy that it'll debut soon.

Hulu has been getting a nice selection of anime.  They added Ghost Hunt recently, and have Slayer, Mushishi, etc.  While it is nice to see anime of the sort that also appeals to the older crowd being promo'd like this, I admit mixed feelings to seeing content I paid for becoming free.

Sakura-con! I'm so exhausted from this convention. There's only so much time you can spend in heels.
