Checking Back In With The New York Times

"Graphic books" continue to sell on the New York Times bestseller list.

I wonder how many weeks of amusement I can drag out of the New York Times' best-selling “graphic books” lists? This week's manga list features the McDonald's and Burger King of manga: VIZ and TOKYOPOP. And no one else. Sigh!

First place went to TOKYOPOP's Fruits Basket 22, but Naruto 41, 36, 40, 39, 38, and 43 took the 2-6 and 9 spots, respectively. Vampire Knight #6 took 7 place, Warcraft: Legends had 8, and in 10 we have Tsubasa. No, not Del Rey's release of CLAMP's Tsubasa Chronicle manga, but a TOKYOPOP title about a thief seeking a woman with wings. I'm a little perplexed by this-- I mean, I'm familiar with the title, but I didn't think it'd have that much draw. Guess I'll have to take a closer look!

It's also worth noting that Warcraft: Legends is the first global manga to hit the list since its first offering on the 13, though I'm sure it won't be the last.

People LIKE the Warcraft books? Really? That's surprising...

Well, I assume they're Warcraft fans more than anime/manga fans. I haven't read them myself, but they don't look horrendous.

Do not underestimated Fan of Warcraft or for that mater Blizzard. Heck I'm still waiting for Starcraft II and the first game came out in 1998. To get some tip of info on the lure for the game is somewhat welcome. Especially we they take so long to releases there game and that the same time add to the lure of the world they made.

I've flipped through them at Borders and read a couple pages. It's not really my cup of tea.

I guess the money hat compels them to buy everything. Collecting is such a tough thing (money-wise).

Manga Rankings based on online sales compiled by some guy ;) for the same week:

1. ↔0 (1) : Naruto 38 – Viz Shonen Jump, Mar 2009 [725.4] ::
2. ↑3 (5) : Rosario+Vampire 6 – Viz Shonen Jump Advanced, Apr 2009 [718.1] ::
3. ↔0 (3) : Naruto 34 – Viz Shonen Jump, Feb 2009 [696.7] ::
4. ↓-2 (2) : Naruto 35 – Viz Shonen Jump, Feb 2009 [696] ::
5. ↑9 (14) : Fruits Basket 22 – Tokyopop, Mar 2009 [685.3] ::
6. ↔0 (6) : Vampire Knight 6 – Viz Shojo Beat, Apr 2009 [681.6] ::
7. ↑4 (11) : Bleach 26 – Viz Shonen Jump, Mar 2009 [660.8] ::
8. ↓-4 (4) : Naruto 37 – Viz Shonen Jump, Mar 2009 [656.5] ::
9. ↓-2 (7) : Naruto 33 – Viz Shonen Jump, Dec 2008 [615.9] ::
10. ↓-2 (8) : Naruto 36 – Viz Shonen Jump, Feb 2009 [592.2] ::

Comparing the two:

Fruits Basket 22 is my #5
Naruto 41 is my #11
Naruto 36 is #10
Naruto 40 is #34
Naruto 39 is #26
Naruto 38 is #1 -- as listed above
Vampire Knight 6 is #6
Warcraft Legends 3 is #136
Naruto 43 is #128
& Tsubasa: Those with Wings 1 is #295 -- but the week before it was #1051 so it actually jumped like 700 ranks.  (yes, my charts are Deep.  I post a weekly 500 and track a whole lot more than that.)

I don't think the Tsubasa title will ever crack the top 10 (or I should say, crack my top ten) but it should do fairly well.  It's by Natsuki Takaya; maybe you've read her other work, #1 New York Times Bestselling Manga Fruits Basket vol. 22.
