CG Filmmaker Imagi Closes its L.A. Shop

The Astro Boy-makers have not profited as much as they hoped, I'd bet.

 WHOA WHOA WHOA STOOOOOOP!
 WHOA WHOA WHOA STOOOOOOP!
It looks like Imagi-- the studio behind this year's lukewarmly received Astro Boy CG film and the upcoming similar Gatchaman CG flick --isn't doing super-well financially speaking. Word is that they've actually closed down their Los Angeles office and have cut off all US subsidiaries from fundings, leaving 30 employees terminated (with a few left as consultants).

Imagi is also still apparently seeking "potential investors" and hopes to "secure more working capital" to fund the Gatchaman film. It's not the first time the company has seen financial difficulty either: in the last months of production on Astro Boy the company had to shut down for a couple of days while waiting for another infusion of cash.

So, if you have a spare $30 million lying around and really want to see a CG movie of Gatchaman made-- or, hell, anything else for that matter, for $30 million you should be able to fund whatever movie you want --well, you know who to call.

You can make great CG in the basement of warehouse in Mexico! SQUARE, "Lets put our studio in Hawaii" ImagI, "lets set up our studio in the most expensive place in America!" You don't see Pixar down in So Cal do you? Remember when Blizzard was in Austin Texas before World of Warcraft ... then moved to So. Cal as soon as they got threw counting all that phat loot?!

Anyway, they screwed up before they started the 3D anyway. STORY FIRST.

@Oneesama: I do not suffer from this Nic Cage affliction of yours, but I really enjoyed the Astro Boy film. On the other hand, if it came down to recommending titles to non-fans, I'd probably say Up is a better watch.

Astro Boy looks like a last-gen videogame.  I've seen better CG on random youtube videos. I'm not saying I'm happy these people lost their jobs though, it's always crap when that happens.
