Central Park Media’s Anime is Now On Sale

But not in the way you are thinking of.

Finally, we can now buy Central Park Media’s anime; that’s if you have a couple ten thousands dollars lying about to buy the licenses. MYC & Associates will be liquidating all of Central Park Media after its unfortunate bankruptcy. Meaning all the anime that they once had will be up for grabs by anyone; even a person like me or Goku.

ANN reports that Central Park Media does not have permanent ownership of all of the titles listed bellow, many of these copyrights only cover what CPM itself made; like subtitles, dubbing, ect. Ok, so if we each put in a dollar, we can buy La Blue Girl for ourselves. Who’s with me!?

Here is the entire list of anime up for liquidation. Now remember, Darkside Blues, Grave of the Fireflies, M.D. Geist., and Now and Then, Here and There have already been acquired by A.D.V.

*Looks at Utena CPM cover*

Gheueh.... bad memories of horribly encoded DVDs.... "THE ARTIFACTS! SO MANY ARTIFACTS!!!" (video encoders know what I'm talking about)

Don't worry guys I have a plan, if we all pool enough money to but the Harlock saga, we can then build a spaceship powered by raw manliness that can take us to Mars, thus boosting U.S. economy with a new line of vehicles that are powered by such a source.

I hate to come off as a hater, but if all they're offering are the sub-par dubs and subs (you'd still have to negotiate with the original Japanese right-holders to re-release any of these) then fandom might be better off if things like Utena and Lodoss War got a whole new translation, dub, sub, & encode.

Tip of the hat and all credit due to CPM for getting in first and getting a version of these properties out there -- and of course not every voice actor can be held accountable for the piss-poor quality of the finished product; some genuine actors were giving a genuine effort -- but I for one would be glad to forget these localizations entire, and start over.  And Patlabor wasn't *terrible* but if someone (ADV?  I know your 'regulars' would do an excellent job -- if they haven't all fled to greener pastures) would re-do these I'd be eternally grateful.  (Please?  It's a good show.  It even has robots in it.  Can't I tempt you?)

If we can't get new dubs... maybe they'd best be served by sub-only releases.  (Or left as pristine, pure early memories of the oldest otaku, without the glaring light of reality to dispell the ilusions of our fond memories.)

We should start a fund to license La Blue Girl and/or Urotsukidoji. Seriously.
lanaswifton June 8, 2009 at 7:38 p.m.
@gia: I'd contribute to that if it meant you guys would post the whole thing on the site for free.
blackholehearton June 8, 2009 at 8:19 p.m.
@gia I'd pitch a few bucks into a hat for that and a few bucks more for Record Of Lodoss War.
