Censorship In Japan Getting Out of Hand, Or Is It All Just Coincidence?

The Japan we all know is changing.

I have fond memories of back in the day, when I would turn on the late night anime station that would show blood, nudity, and violence against animals, that other animated shows would never dream of showing. Sadly, Canned Dogs reports that this might be changing, and it’s scary. A couple different manga artists have recently reported that the things they have been working on have been canceled. Now it is not certain the these cancelation are due to censorship issues, but they just might be.

Bokurano’s author Kitou Mohiro special chapter for Bokurano that was going to be in the next issue of IKKI magazine was canceled; but not just for that issue, but completely. The worst part is that it was already finished.

GanGan online announced that the upcoming light novel “Kurai Heya” by Karabe Yousuke has been canceled as well, but the reasoning has not been stated. Karabe Yousuke states on his blog that the reason behind this cancellation was that it was against the ethics regulations of the company.

The poor guy asked them how he could change the story, so that it can fit in with their regulations, but they told him it was impossible for him to change the story to match their regulations. Being a fellow writer, I really feel bad for what is happening to him. Hopefully someone else will publish his novel.

So are both of these cancelations due to the whole censorship tsunami that is hitting Japan at the moment, or is this just coincidence? I hope it’s just coincidence.

This isn't the first time a series was cancelled for content. That's why some series 'jump' manga publishers mid-run, or creators opt to create a doujin to cover the content they had wanted to be in the story, but couldn't run due to guidelines for the publication.

I seem to recall this happening to CLAMP a time or two? Like with the X:1999 manga, and I think that's why there's a CLAMP made RG Veda doujin too. But I can't remember for certain. -_-

I'd say coincidence for now... three or four authors/mangaka being put off in this fashion isn't quite enough of a margin to say that it's the result of any particular correlation between them, especially considering just how many mangaka and serialized story authors are out there in Japan.

Now, if there were either a series of 10 or more, or maybe a few big name guys who had theirs canceled for notably similar reasons, then I'd say it should raise some flags.

But then again, just like with cases of zombies and mysterious homicides in your neighborhood involving the "victim(s)" being decapitated, it can't hurt to remain alert...

Wow, this is really stupid.  Why would they do this all of a sudden?
