Today - Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou Episode 1: Stolen Book of Friends

I hope you weren't too sad to have a Natsume-less day, but if so, I think today's episode may make up for it-- if the title is anything to go by. Second season, go!

(Note: Since the seasons had a break between them I thought it would be appropriate to restart the episode count as per most of the resources on the show, rather than Crunchyroll's system which numbers all of them from one show.)

Episode 1 ... again?? Wake up Gia.

@Slim: Ah-ah, read the title again-- this is ZOKU Natsume Yuujinchou. Second season. So yes, episode 1. :)

Apparently manjuu are the best way for humans and youkai to bond. I shall keep this in mind. Also, I really like the new ED, it's very soft and pretty. Very suitable for the mood.

The new OP wasn't my favourite at first, but it grew on me. I feel its different tone is a good representation of the shift in Natsume's attitude since the early episodes of season one. It also has a decent serving of Reiko, and she's pretty hot.

@Sigue: Indeed. By the way, I have a Christmas present for you:

Saw it in downtown San Rafael earlier today :)

Woa that Preta (Gaki or Hungry Ghost) yōkai was freaky. At least I assume it's supposed to be a Preta given it's crazy long neck, coupled with looking very starved being skin and bones and it's grey corpse like colour, which fits from what I've seen in Buddhist paintings depicting the six different realms that constitute saṃsāra.

I still don't get why tieing a cloth around his forehead that has the kanji for eye on it makes him decieve the other yōkai of his human nature.

Riou reminded me of the depiction of Helel/Lucifer(angelic form) in the Persona series but with much larger and fewer wings and minus the horns.

I like the new opening and ending, a big part of that being I love winter and snow, also I wonder who the new girl who looks mysteriously like Reiko is in the opening and ending or is that Reiko but wearing a hat all the time and with different eyebrows.

@Konanda: Nice catch! Yes, she was pretty creepy. As for the cloth/kanji thing, the Japanese believe(d) very strongly in the power of kanji and things like that-- I relate it very much to when a character in an anime uses an ofuda (those slips of paper with writing on them) to freeze or destroy a demon by slapping it on the creature's forehead...or a doll with a kanji on it that humans are supposed to see as a human or whatever else the kanji means. :)

Actually, the entire concept of Natsume-- that demons can be subordinated by their writing of their own names on paper --is related to this same idea, I expect.

I get that I was just curious of the choice of the kanji for eye and if it means anything symbolically. I mean sparrow gal (I forget her name) had a picture of a sparrow on it but how Natsume uses the kanji for eye (me) when he's disguising himself as a demon I have the feeling I'm missing some cultural context for using that particular kanji and was wondering if anyone knew why it was that one in particular.

@Konanda: For Natsume, I think the idea is that they gave him a single eye instead of one eye, so that he looks like a demon-- probably like a hitotsume-kozou.

@gia:
Sounds logical.
