Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan Scores a Dub

Same amount of violence, now with 100% more English.

Dokuro-chan gets an English club-- err, dub
Dokuro-chan gets an English club-- err, dub
Back when we were recording the nosebleeds 3-Minute Expert video, I took a clip from Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (aka Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan), and I then had to explain to my office-mates what the show was about. My meandering description went something like, "um, this angel keeps slaughtering this one guy and bringing him back to life whenever he accidentally sees her panties, and it's all weird and sometimes kinda gross."

I don't think they were too interested in seeing it themselves.

But apparently plenty of you guys are! In addition to the 2008 release by Media Blasters, word is that a new special edition is coming out-- and it's going to include an English dub.

"The hell you say," you say? Well, that's the word from AoD's Chris Beveridge, back on the same thread where he mentioned MB's license of Kanokon-- which was more or less confirmed when the Kanokon release appeared on Right Stuf, if you didn't believe me/Beveridge in the first place.

Interesting, interesting. Hey, maybe Dokuro-chan is one of Adult Swim's new anime!

UPDATE: Media Blasters' Jon Sirabella chimed in on the thread with a few other tidbits-- less Boys Love in 2010, although Loveless may be next for a rerelease with dub, but it's currently selling "too well" in its litebox format, so they'll be waiting a while. Thanks, rorwut!

I love dubs and I love that three-minute expert clip.  Ultraviolent slapstick FTW.

I always thought Dokuro-chan would be a perfect fit for Adult Swim, considering some of the original stuff that they air.

I love the fountain of blood coming out of that guy's head.  Looks like a fun show.

Ahh ... bloody violence and pantsu. It's like fine wine and Mad Dog 20/20 mixed to perfection.

Dokuro-chan is pretty awesome. I probably won't re-buy since I bought the subbed release.

@AHR:
Dubs are very much a mixed bag for me. Some do really well, but most either do horribly or just fall flat. You never get the same depth of emotion. It often feels half assed in dubs or it sounds like they are 'trying too hard'. Though, I probably blame that more on direction.

As an example. Listen to Lelouch in Code Geass. In the Japanese version he sounds dark and you pick up on his emotions. The English version makes him sound too high and young. He just lacks that power in his voice.

@FoxxFireArt: Yeah, it's true, dubs can be very hit or miss.  Evangelion is one of my favorite shows (one of my favorite anythings, really), but i can't watch the English dub cause I can't stand Spike Spencer's interpretation of Shinji.  It sounds too much like a grown man playing a whiny kid and I think you lose sympathy for the character - the Japanese voice actress is a lot more raw.

That said: I love dubs for two reasons;

1) They allow me to watch anime in a tiny window while I'm editing video (IT HELPS CLEAR MY MIND, OK?)
2) English dubs have to fit the conversational speed and rhythms of Japanese speech, and they contain all these weirdly translated Japanese expressions and wordplay jokes - it creates a dialogue style that's totally unlike natural english, but has a charm all it's own.  I freaking LOVE the dub of Excel Saga for this reason, though I had to give it up when they switched voice actresses half way through.  Couldn't stand the new girl, she changed the whole humor of the character.

@AHR:
Evangelion is a good example of a good dub(aside from Shinji). I believe the voice actress for Rei Ayanami, Amanda Winn Lee, also did work on the translation of the series and she was the ADR Director. She talked about it in the commentaries on the End of Evangelion(turns out it wasn't) movie.

Some good dubs I've heard are Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell: SAS, and Death Note.

I've been studying the language for about a year now. It's funny how when you start reading translated manga. You can tell what the Japanese version would sound like.
