Bleach #500 - Rescuer in the Deep Dark
In a Nutshell
Ichigo is trapped in jail cell while and can't do anything while, as usual, the Gotei 13 shows how incapable they are of performing their sole duty: to protect Soul Society. Meanwhile, a mystery Shinigami shows up to one shot the Vandy that Urahara is facing off against.
High Points
- I like the old man Vandy with the guns.
- Oohhh, mystery shinigami.
Low Points
- I now feel safe in saying that big round numbers like 500 don't mean anything special in Japan.
Rants and Raves
There are no real low points in the chapter yet I couldn't get excited for more than 2 frames. I believe the drama is supposed to be coming from, "wow, the Gotei really have their backs against the wall now!!!" but coming from them getting solo'd by one guy, losing to an army seems appropriate. On one hand, I'm curious to see who the mystery shinigami is. On the other hand, has there ever been a Bleach fight where someone didn't show up out of the blue and land a damaging hit. Hell, I think that actually happened with the very same character a few weeks back when Urahara showed up and landed what seemed like agame over attack.
Grade
I give this chapter a C. It was right down the middle of almost bad and almost good. Hopefully, the reveal next week will be someone awesome and not just Isshin. I thought he died, people have told me otherwise, but now would be the perfect spot for Grimmjow to make his return. Him or anyone from Aizen's shinigami trio are about the only characters that could get me excited at this point.
I think that is a requirement for every battle in Bleach.

for a 500th Chapter, it wasn't the most riveting. although I wouldn't be surprised if that mystery person is Grimmjow or even somehow Ulquiorra.

@AgentJ: The craziest one I remember when he shows up the second time. That fight goes back and forth so many times.
All of that was in the span of like one episode. I think that was the first time they went super overload like that and it was cool to see in the anime (I'm not sure how it came off in the manga, though). It got played out when they then started using it for almost every battle afterward, but no lie, I do always get a little excited to see who's going to show up out of the blue each time.
