BLEACH Ch. 603 Review

This is one of the most appropriately titled chapters I've seen in a long time.

Yhwach is like that cousin you play games with and always hits reset when he starts losing.

Comrades may help one another, but Yhwach is a king who takes what he wants for his own gains. No explanation required.

The Good

Giselle creeps me the hell out, but I love it for some reason.
Giselle creeps me the hell out, but I love it for some reason.

My favorite part of this chapter had little to do with the plot, but it still had an effect on me as I read it. It was the scene of Giselle taking her blood back from Bambietta. It's hard for me to put into words what draws me to this zombie-girl. It's not that I like her. It has more to do with her ability to make my skill crawl. She's a villain I love to hate, and she disturbs me on levels that the Joker from DC never has.

I read this one scene, and I actually feel genuine remorse for the fate of Bambietta. That's something I came into this arc never expecting. It's one of the better interpretations of a "fate worse than death" that I think I've ever read. I have to applaud Kubo for that.

The Bad

For as much as I enjoyed this Giselle creep show moment, all this look to the Soul Society front of the war does is to serves as preamble to Yhwach hitting the reset button for his own royal guard. Normally, I would say that's a ridiculous cop out, but I think it works in the sense that he's sacrificing his lesser troops to resurrect his elite few. He also doesn't care who lives or dies. He gets stronger regardless. I'm fine with that. Ichigo's group are going to need to fight someone when they show up, right? I just hate being teased with the possibility of seeing some of these other Vandenreich Voll Stern Dich. Only for their powers to be torn away.

Verdict 2/5

This chapter is titled, "What The Hell"; and I can't argue with that. I had that same reaction. While I enjoyed reading this issue and the aspects of a particular scene, the majority of it is sort of pointless. This chapter actually spends time introducing you to a character who immediately dies. Admittedly, there is something funny about that, but that's still hard to forgive. With these lesser Stern Ritter now robbed of their power, what's the point of even watching these battles anymore? Maybe the ones who avoided direct contact can still absorb more from the environment, but could they regain their former level? Would they even want to fight on for a man who just cast you away as if you were a spare piece from an Ikea set?

If Ichigo's crew shows up and they are all randomly separated I am going to be so mad.
