BLEACH Ch. 583 Review

Not much is happening, but at least I'm entertained.

It slices, it dices, it cancels out Quincy attacks, and it can be yours for six easy payments!

These lady Vandenreich are out for the glory of eliminating one of the highest profile targets of the war, but Ichigo doesn't plan to fall in battle so soon after his arrival.

The Good

These four actually keep things from getting boring.
These four actually keep things from getting boring.

So far, this hasn't really gone much of anywhere since the previous chapter. However, it's not as bad as I would have imaged it could be. Candice Catnipp & Pals are keeping things just entertaining enough to the point where I'm still having some fun with it. That actually surprised me, and it's a positive nod to Kubo's cast.

This does raise at least one interesting detail. As we now know, the smaller of the Zangetsu is the embodiment of the Zangetsu imposter, Ichigo's inherit Quincy abilities. We see him use this one to deflect the light arrows. Could that be its primary ability? It's a zanpakuto that cancels Quincy power? That would be pretty cool, if true.

The Bad

No matter how many giant attacks we see these girls pull out, I'm just not buying them as a threat, at least to Ichigo. The only reason they took out Kenpachi was due to the damage he suffered in the battle with Gremmy. That doesn't make them more threatening. Ichigo outclasses these girls by so much that this fight should have been long over. All he's doing is just deflecting. I'm willing to bet that this is only going on because Ichigo's taking it easy on them.

Verdict 3/5

I think it's safe to say that this entire chapter pretty much exists to give Kubo an excuse to have Ichigo pull off a brand new attack in the finale. It's an overly extended set up for a cliffhanger ending. It's not great, but it was still a pretty fun read. That's due in part to the cool action and personalities on display.

I am hoping that Kubo avoids too many time wasters. At this point Bleach is pretty much headed to a conclusion so Kubo doesn't have much of a reason to walk around the finale. Bleach has been doing well. I really don't want it to be drawn out like Naruto's "finale".

The juxtaposition between Bleach and Naruto is very surprising. While Naruto has been heavily relying on "chosen one" plot design, Kubo managed to set up Bleach to the point where Ichigo is special, but his specialness is a result of believable coincidences rather than invisible hand plot writing. Ichigo's weapons are likely to play a very special role in the battle against the Quincy.

I would compare Naruto and Bleach differently. I don't think we can deny the fact that Ichigo is the chosen one/special one of his story; kubo has made that clear since the beginning where has basically forced ichigo to the front of every story line even when he has no business being there, usually at the detriment of every other character. In other words, whereas Naruto is only now achieving truly 'special' status, it's kind of become the norm with Ichigo, to the point where nothing about his character can surprise us, not even learning that he is part soul king or something similarly ridiculous.

I would also call Kubo the emperor of dragging things out; as I think I have mentioned before, Bleach moves almost as slowly as one piece, but without as much content, with kubo basically doing in six chapters what he should have done in one. Bleach has to be the shortest weekly manga series around, because so many times almost nothing happens.

@katmic: I think where I was making a distinction is "chosen" versus "special". Ichigo is definitely a special being in that his mix of reitsu gives him the resistances and strengths of the 3 orders of power in the spirit world. Naruto is special because he has the 9 tails. The difference that Kubo managed to show is that Ichigo's coincidental powers have helped him win battles that he couldn't. Naruto has been getting dragged along in the plot because of the will of other characters. Naruto isn't even that special since most other people with tailed beast powers seemed stronger than him. Other Shinigami are stronger than Ichigo, but they lack the power balance of the 3 forces.

I could just be selectively finding faults in Naruto and fewer faults in Bleach, but I don't feel bad about that anymore because Naruto has become terrible whether I intentionally find fault or not.

Dig Deeper into Bleach

The story follows a fifteen year old high-schooler who is forced into an adventure as a Shinigami. He starts off as a weak warrior of honor but progresses to be more than a match for most captains. Now he will face the Soul Society's greatest threat, Sousuke Aizen,Xcution, and Vandereich.
