BLADE & SOUL #3 -- Special Review

You're looking at tropes, done right, here.

I spent a lot of words in the previous write-ups, crowing about Alka’s characterization, so I might as well give some space here to the drunk cowgirl who’s chasing her...

Again, it’s refreshing to see a familiar trope portrayed with some actual consequences to match the actions we normally take for granted. Honestly, I feel like I’ve seen dozens of buxom borderline-bimbos who wind up getting drunk most of the time. What sets her apart is that the show stresses that she’s… kind of a loser? And not in a sexy way either.

We still get the easy jokes and slapstick of the vaudeville ‘comic drunk’ character, but it all comes with moments stressing that this gal’s actually rather pathetic and lonely. And again, when she talks about the bounty on Alka’s head - - and frets about her payday being cut into by this other gang of rogues - - it really feels like it’s being written by somebody with a real sense of money. It’s not somebody just rattling off the vague value system of an RPG.

(And yes, again, I realize the irony of saying that when this is actually based on an MMO).

It’s early to jump to any conclusions but, at this point, I’d really love to use this show as an example show other series can’t fall back on excuses when they use familiar character tropes. There is a better way to do things.

Watch "Revenge" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.

I loved the drunken gal, she added some grounded comedy to the mix. However like you said Tom, her portrayal feels authentic and human, Which makes a real difference. Just wait, in the next episode I think you'll have a lot to more to say about The way this show handles it's characters like people, rather than Predictably thin stereotypes.

I like the series' fight scenes, but the stories feel disconnected. You will run into episodes where the stories don't even link up. The side characters are fun, but they're taking a lot of attention from Alka who is like the first player, Link from Legend of Zelda. They did it on purpose just to make the viewers feel like they're in her POV or something. I could be wrong here. It's not completely POV.

@Kino88:

I like Elle Karen better than Jin Hazuki. :)

As things go on one should note the lack of pure motivated by good characters. An when one shows up note red shirt death flag about them. Looking back from 8 the series feels disconnected an more episodic than a series. Much like action tv series in the 80's. With some stories that seems taken from old westerns an given a fresh coat of eastern mmorpg paint.

It would be interesting if you compare the alcoholism issue to Nanana's Buried Treasure or Kawai Complex's.

@Marshal Victory: This kind of grey character is one thing anime does well....the shows I end up liking have mostly no motivated by pure good (aka real especially sense pure good arguably doesn't exist) or pure evil characters. Still don't think this is a show for me but interesting to see Tom liking a show based on an MMO. I think when the new shows come out we should start a pool on which ones TOM will like and not like, might be fun to see how accurate our guesses turn out to be (but no way to make the guesses if known to TOM not influence him I suppose).

Both women, Shiki Maboro and Mayumi Nishikino are big boobed alcoholics. Such a strange pattern. Tom hasn't watch those two shows. It's hard for him to review Slice of Life shows. Nanana's Buried Treasure is one of my favorite shows. You should meet us in the Nanana's Buried Treasure Discussion.
