BL Novels Ai no Kusabi Get OVA'd...Again

A classic sci-fi boys love tale is being re-animated.

Now there's a name I didn't expect to see in the news again: Ai no Kusabi is an extremely popular series of sci-fi yaoi novels written by Rieko Yoshihara and illustrated by Katsumi Michihara (and published in English by Digital Manga Publishing/June), and in 1992 it was made into a two-episode OVA.

Now SaiAni reports that it'll be made into another OVA, this time 13 volumes (presumably those are single-episode DVDs, although it's hard to say). It'll be directed by Katsuhito Akiyama, who directed the original OVA as well as the original El-Hazard and the Bubblegum Crisis OVA. Conceptual art will be done by Production I.G's Atsushi Takeuchi, who directed an episode of the recent Star Wars: The Clone Wars CG TV series and has done design work on everything from Cromartie High School to Tenchi Universe to End of Evangelion. The animation production will be done by Ken Media, which is best known for producing The Melody of Oblivion and even working on Fist of the North Star.

The official website for the OVA has already launched, and it should start seeing a release sometime in 2009.

I had no idea that Ai no Kusabi was going to have anime episodes!  I really like the animation in the OVA but by looking at the snapshot of Riki and Iason, I must say that Iason looks very pale, almost vampiric compared to the OVA.  At least in the OVA, Iason wasn't that pale.  I don't about the new animation, I just hope its not bad!
