BINBOGAMI GA! #9 - - Special Review

You'd think at least one of these would hit the mark.

One of you lunatics described this show as being like the anime equivalent of FAMILY GUY and I’m seeing that the comparison apply to more than just the copious pop culture gags, now. Most times, I’m in favor of a show being fleet-footed with its pacing. This time, however, I think we had two premises that would’ve been great for two separate episodes; but they ended up getting short-shifted here after being squeezed so tightly together. As much I enjoy the unpredictability and odd pacing of the show, both qualities seem to work against it this time.

(Seriously, it's settled into a funny rhythm by this point, grooving back and forth between bawdy farces and melodramas with hard-hitting morality plays).

Seriously, I’ll play armchair director here and say that I would’ve made one episode goofing on sports anime/manga (with PRINCE OF TENNIS as the focus, of course) and then one episode skewering “food fighters” like IRON CHEF, TORIKO, et al. Those are both genres (or sub-genres?) with a host of tropes to poke fun at, but we didn't get to really dig into either of them here.

And don’t try telling me that this show is less concerned with parody than it is with characters arcs or some such. First, the number of sight gags referencing ONE PIECE, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE and however many other titles I don’t recognize comprise about 60% of air time. Second, Sakura and Binbo's relationship isn't exactly evolving. Sure, I think it's funny how this has turned into some twisted buddy comedy starring the snooty popular girl and her inept guardian angle... but I'm not missing the fact that Sakura seems to forget every lesson she learns in this story.

Watch this episode, "Eh?! You Said, 'After All This'?!" & "There's No Way That Happens After Just Two Minutes!!!!" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.

In the manga these were little one-shot stories too. Strangely enough they seem to have skipped over a somewhat-important story arc. Wonder if they'll come back to it for the last 2 episodes.

I love how both Momiji and Kuroyuri are similar to each other. They both have casts on their limbs. Kuroyuri has cast on her left foot while Momiji has it on her right arm. Also, Momiji has Kumagai while Kuroyuri has Toady, a green frog that I wished it talked like Kermit the frog.

Yeah, I hope Kuroyuri shows up again. The more gods, the wackier this series get.

@DocHaus:

They did? I forgot to do the manga/anime differences. I need to find that Kuroyuri chapter.

@takashichea: In the manga Kuroyuri shows up in a side chapter in a later volume (5?) but probably won't appear in the anime again barring a second/third season.

It's Momiji Luffy!

Got some cool snapshots. Shoot I need to post in the other discussion thread.

@DocHaus:

Thanks, I read thru chapter 18. Not much differences from its anime counterpart.

Also it seems from the preview at the end of #9 that they are doing the "clean Momiji" arc for the next couple of eps. Wonder if they plan to end it on an anime-original episode?

@DocHaus:

I haven't read a lot of manga since I have this strange thing where I read the manga chapters that the anime covers to avoid spoiling myself or giving in to temptation.

With the way the anime progresses (an episode usually covers 2 chapters about 30-40 pages long) and we have 13 volumes, it's going to be like Beelzebub which I won't like. It might end in 24 or 40 episodes.

Dig Deeper into Good Luck Girl!

A God of Misfortune and Poverty cracks down on an overly-abundant person who drains "Happiness Energy" from others. From there, both parties end up clashing with hilarious results.
