I’ve never been one to hold off on saying, “I told you so” - - so it’s quite gratifying to see my prediction about this show’s formula playing out.
True, Sakura doesn’t actually like too much of a jerk in this episode, but the little puppy still expects her to act like one and he is subsequently surprised by the depth of character she exhibits by getting so torn up about her poor butler. It’s an unusual formula, certainly, but it’s still a formula on the order of Mutta’s various neurotic ticks being spun around into positive strengths in each episode of SPACE BROTHERS.
Also, yes I’m aware that I’m reviewing this episode after saying I’d be stepping back from the series yesterday. I don’t know who should say, “I told you so,” in this case, but I never said I wouldn’t return. It just happened that fourth episode was up, so it was as easy as opening a new tab on my browser. Past this point, I may still keep up with this show, but it’ll have to be sporadically.
Anyway, BINBOGAMI-GA’s pendulum swung back to “funny” with a vengeance for this episode. Boy, did it ever. It did. It did. I’m going to pull this show up as a counterpoint for every time some T&A show tries to get a free pass when it just plainly isn’t funny. Me being able to catch more of the references this time certainly helped, as well (pretty surprised they pulled out the MONONOKE costume.)
Actually, speaking of MONONOKE, this is probably the nerdiest possible thing to say - - but the whole (gimpy?) get-up with “Sado-Masochistic, Little Brother Puppy Dog” (as I call him) has once again reminded me that I finally need to study up on my Shintoism one of these days. Never realized there was a connection between MONONOKE’s wolves and Amaterasu from OKAMI, but dogs do show up a lot in these stories… and it ain’t a coincidence, and I want to find out why.

I might have to actually check this out if you are saying that the references and wacky situations are actually humorous and not just dumb like most anime.
Wait, I was not wrong! You just tweak your predictions a bit. The creator of Binbogami Ga! is a dog lover. I forgot what chapter he mentions about his passion for drawing dogs.
This episode was hilarious.

Also, glad to see you're not ready to drop this show just yet Tom, that last review had me worried. It's definitely worth riding this out all the way, it's one of the most popular shows this anime season from what I can tell.
