Battle Royal: Amuro vs. Heero

The winner is the one with the red shell.

When two amazing Gundam pilots battle each other it usually comes down to the weapons, armor, and special features of the actual robot and not the pilot themselves. That sucks, because the Gundam anime was created to take the emphasis off the robots, and onto the people who control them. So how about we throw away these giant robots and put two interesting pilots in something a little more fun.

Who would win in a Mario Kart Race, Amuro Ray from the Original Gundam, or Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing?

Rainbow Road
Rainbow Road

Rules

The rules for Mario Kart are simple. First you have to work for Nintendo, which I guess means we are already going to be breaking rule number one, but whatever. Second, each race has three laps, and for this race the only place that matters is the number one spot. Third, items will be allowed just like in the game, so this will not be a 100% race based on skill; there needs to be a little spice to make it interesting. Finally, there will be no other people participating in this race other than Amuro and Heero.

Setting

Of course this epic match won’t be played on a boring course found in the Mushroom Cup. No, these are Gundam pilots, they naturally do battle in space! So this match will be fought on Rainbow Road, the final track in every Mario Kart game to date. Here there are no guard rails, insane hairpin turns, and the occasional loose Chain Chomp.

Amuro Ray

Amuro is the main character from the original Gundam anime. He is the hero of the One Year War, and helped save the Earth from Char’s Counterattack years later. He just so happens to be the next evolved form of man, named Newtype. Newtypes have a heightened mental awareness, and the ability to use basic ESP powers.

Regardless, Amuro is a genius at using technology; for example he was able to start up a Gundam and defeat two attacking Zaku on his first try. For this race, we will use the Amuro from after the original series. At this point he is a seasoned and skilled pilot, able to hold his own, even with a headless Gundam. Dispite his skill, Amuro can sometimes be overemotional, which can put him at a disadvantage on the battle field.

Heero Yuy

Unlike Amuro, Heero was raised as a killer. Not much is known about his past, except that he was an assassin before becoming a Gundam pilot. Because of this Heero is seen as being emotionless. This is not always a bad thing because he can keep a calm mind while in the thick of battle.

Heero is a professional; he does his homework before missions, and will do whatever it will take to make it successful, unlike Amuro who is more spontaneous. However, when things go bad, Heero has a tendency to self destruct his vehicle. We will use the Heero from after the original series.

The Battle

Amuro, confident that he will win, is taken aback when Heero peels away when the light turns green. Heero was prepared, like he always is, and looked up how to do the start boost on gamefaqs. However, this lead will short and sweet because an item box will be sure to give him an item that Amuro can use to strip Heero from first place. I suspect that both are so talented at firing weapons that each time someone gets an item, their places will switch. They will constantly switch back and forth throughout the first and second lap, but the third will be different. By this time both will have a true handle on their carts, and know exactly how each item works. The winner will be the one that learns the fastest, and makes use of any advantage given to him.

The Winner

Let’s face it, the Gundams in Gundam Wing were built a lot stronger than the ones in the original. Heero was used to soaking up tons of damage with the Wing, instead of dodging. While Amuro on the other hand had to dodge almost every attack, or else he would die. With that said I believe Amuro will be the winner because of his ability to dodge Heero’s attacks.

Throughout the fight Amuro will learn how to use the items. By the third lap he will be able to attack Heero from first place. How does he do this? By using his Newtype powers to control a shell like a fin funnel. With the right shot he would be able to hit Heero while he is turning and force him to fall from the Rainbow Road, throwing away any hope for victory.

@hitsusatsu11: So does every other martial artists in anime. That doesn't say anything at all about his ability to pilot MS or Karts. That's like saying Superman in a Gundam would some how be better at piloting it then Kamille Bidan. Now if it was a literal fist fight we were talking about here then sure Heero would win. Unless it's was in space with fencing swords because Amuro got experience with that.

So does heero.

I've seen MSG, CCA, Zeta, and Wing. What Heero has done impresses me far more than what Amuro has done. Heero's piloting reflexes are not even human, iirc in the manga he's even  hooked up to a machine and it determines it's impossible for him to react like that. He's also only one of two who could step up and master the ZERO system.
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 3, 2010 at 8:08 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11: I must have totally forgot when that happened. I've watched all of those it's just Wing was on the end o my last rotation through the series so it's the foggiest. Yes but by the same token Amuro reflexs aren't human either. He has literally got Spidey sense. I mean they literally did declare a new race when they witness just how impossible Amuro's reactions and abilities are.

Amuro mastered the Psychoframe which is UC equivalent of the ZERO system . So who is to say if he could or could not master the system. If anything Heero is just precursor to Newtypes in the Wing universe. I think that's further evidence of that could be seen in Gundam 00 which is pretty much is re-imagining of Wing as Seed is of 0079. Which the 00 resident Heero is literally a Newtype at the end of the series when he masters a system very much like the ZERO system. Also of course what Heero did seems more impressive but you've just got to take into account just the general escalation of the series throughout the years into account. Things that maybe even second rate characters do in one of the SEEDs or 00 are a lot more impressive then anything the main characters of previous shows including Wing. Does that make them better then previous characters? No it just means they had a bigger budget and better animation. If you want to see what Amuro and Heero would have done with the same level of advancement you just have to look at Kira and Saji.
hitsusatsu11on June 3, 2010 at 8:13 p.m.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: Psycho frame enhances newtype powers, nothing like the anguish one goes through when mastering the ZERO system. Nothing any SEED character did is as impressive as Heero or Amuro did. (im not a seed hater or anything, just not that impressive imo) Heero=/= Setsuna, its not the same as Shin=Kamille, not by a long shot. Heero adapts quicker and imo is plain more skilled.
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 3, 2010 at 8:53 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11: It enchances newtype powers but that doesn't make it easy to use. In fact it's about the hardest thing to use in the UC universe. Also Amuro was not with out his anguish because of his abilities. Just because he was a Newtype he was haunted by Lalah to the point of staying away from space just because of the pain it caused him. He had to get over they hurtle then he had to master the Psycho frame.

Also even if yous say the did noting particularly impressive I find the whole fact that Kira literally fights two armies with only a hand full of back up to be particularly impressive. You might not agree with the Heero = Setsuna you can tell that was what they were going for. They came to the people who now make Gundam and said hey make a character like Amuro and you get Kira "Jesus" Yamato and when they were asked to make a character like Heero they made Setsuna. That's obviously a refection of how the makers of Gundam view both characters. However Setsuna did fight three armies that later fused into a super army. One of Kira's armies though a comprised entirely of super humans and with the same full earth force army.

Amuro also adapts super fast himself. The first time he touched a suit other then the RX-78 after years of retirement he seemed to handle himself quite well. At least maching the abilities of Char the epitome of experience in the UC. Amuro has skills, experience, intelligence, natural talent , adaptability, a natural space compass, spidey sense, strong will, and his own name in his ending theme.
hitsusatsu11on June 3, 2010 at 9:04 p.m.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: Yes Amuro was deeply troubled by Lala's death. A character he saw for like 2 episodes btw, just saying. (Shinji-Kawaru anyone) And yes the "Amuro, Amuro" ending is catchy. This is my favorite MSG song, English Ritchie Kotzan version.

Still fails compared to GW's two mix songs though.

Anyhow in pretty much any mission I would want to have Heero piloting over Amuro, because with Heero I know it will be:
Mission Complete
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 3, 2010 at 9:23 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11: Yeah but I'll at least somewhat accept there psychic resonance that transcended space, time, and even death. I still prefer the original japanese version of he opening. The Gundam Wing openings are great but that original ending for it needs to die a horrible fiery disease ridden death. Also for my money for Gundam songs is ZZ Gundam's second opening just something about that way that lady pronounces penthouse gets it lodged in my brain.
hitsusatsu11on June 3, 2010 at 9:26 p.m.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: Not a fan of Reelena and animals?
GodLen staff on June 3, 2010 at 9:30 p.m.
@HeeroYuy: love you
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 3, 2010 at 9:31 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11: That and fact the song it just terrible especially compared to the greatness of the rest of the songs. Actually I do have a question does anyone actually like Relena?
hitsusatsu11on June 3, 2010 at 9:38 p.m.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: Meh, Heero should have killed her.
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 3, 2010 at 9:53 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11: See that's why Amuro is better than Heero. He got no follow through. Amuro kills his love interest. I'd fully expect the "professional" to follow through with his promises.
Vinceborgon June 4, 2010 at 6:31 a.m.
@hitsusatsu11:
I like Andrew W.K.'s version better. But that's just me.

HeeroYuyon June 4, 2010 at 1:25 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11:@Ryuku_Ryosake: Everyone seems to think back and hate Relena, but am I the only one who thinks she wasn't that bad compared to Dorothy Catalonia? *still has nightmares over those eyebrows*  (Also Noin >>> all the other girls on the show)

Seriously though, I blame 90% of the hate she gets for her English VA's performance, sorta like how everyone that saw GW on Toonami thinks Heero has no personality because of Mark Hildreth. Though, to be fair, there is no excuse for that original ending song choice, and Toonami will remain awesome in my mind for using a far more epic song in it's place.
cfatalison June 4, 2010 at 1:27 p.m.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: Amuro didn't even promise to kill lalah
hitsusatsu11on June 4, 2010 at 2 p.m.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: Na na na, Amuro never wanted to kill Lala and was all sad about it.

@HeeroYuy: I though Hildreth, Drummond, Mcneil, Cole, Morrow and Swaile were all very good VA's. Releena's not that bad I suppose. But Noin is the best girl in the show your right.
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 4, 2010 at 2:22 p.m.
@HeeroYuy: I've watched the entire series subbed and I still hated her. Your are correct Dorothy was even worse but lucky the entire plot didn't find some way to revolve itself around her.

@cfatalis:@hitsusatsu11: That's exactly my point Amuro didn't even want to do it or promise to do it. Heero wanted to do it, promised to do it, and still some how failed to do it. And Heero is supposed to be the cold blooded professional out of the two of them.
hitsusatsu11on June 4, 2010 at 2:28 p.m.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: Maybe because he believed in her potential? Heero is more of a killer than Amuro thats for sure.
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 4, 2010 at 2:53 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11: What kind of potential could he have seen in her other than being popular school girl #5 who knows too much. There is no way he could have known that she was Princess Messiah set to rule with world in a peaceful reign,
hitsusatsu11on June 4, 2010 at 2:55 p.m.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: Because of plot of course.

Dig Deeper into Heero Yuy

Arguably the main character of Gundam Wing, he is one of the original five Gundam pilots and pilots the Wing Gundam and Wing Gundam Zero. Despite his young age, he is a trained professional with little emotion and extensive knowledge and piloting experience.
