Battle Royal: Amuro vs. Heero

The winner is the one with the red shell.

When two amazing Gundam pilots battle each other it usually comes down to the weapons, armor, and special features of the actual robot and not the pilot themselves. That sucks, because the Gundam anime was created to take the emphasis off the robots, and onto the people who control them. So how about we throw away these giant robots and put two interesting pilots in something a little more fun.

Who would win in a Mario Kart Race, Amuro Ray from the Original Gundam, or Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing?

Rainbow Road
Rainbow Road

The rules for Mario Kart are simple. First you have to work for Nintendo, which I guess means we are already going to be breaking rule number one, but whatever. Second, each race has three laps, and for this race the only place that matters is the number one spot. Third, items will be allowed just like in the game, so this will not be a 100% race based on skill; there needs to be a little spice to make it interesting. Finally, there will be no other people participating in this race other than Amuro and Heero.

Of course this epic match won’t be played on a boring course found in the Mushroom Cup. No, these are Gundam pilots, they naturally do battle in space! So this match will be fought on Rainbow Road, the final track in every Mario Kart game to date. Here there are no guard rails, insane hairpin turns, and the occasional loose Chain Chomp.

Amuro Ray

Amuro is the main character from the original Gundam anime. He is the hero of the One Year War, and helped save the Earth from Char’s Counterattack years later. He just so happens to be the next evolved form of man, named Newtype. Newtypes have a heightened mental awareness, and the ability to use basic ESP powers.

Regardless, Amuro is a genius at using technology; for example he was able to start up a Gundam and defeat two attacking Zaku on his first try. For this race, we will use the Amuro from after the original series. At this point he is a seasoned and skilled pilot, able to hold his own, even with a headless Gundam. Dispite his skill, Amuro can sometimes be overemotional, which can put him at a disadvantage on the battle field.

Heero Yuy

Unlike Amuro, Heero was raised as a killer. Not much is known about his past, except that he was an assassin before becoming a Gundam pilot. Because of this Heero is seen as being emotionless. This is not always a bad thing because he can keep a calm mind while in the thick of battle.
Heero is a professional; he does his homework before missions, and will do whatever it will take to make it successful, unlike Amuro who is more spontaneous. However, when things go bad, Heero has a tendency to self destruct his vehicle. We will use the Heero from after the original series.

The Battle

Amuro, confident that he will win, is taken aback when Heero peels away when the light turns green. Heero was prepared, like he always is, and looked up how to do the start boost on gamefaqs. However, this lead will short and sweet because an item box will be sure to give him an item that Amuro can use to strip Heero from first place. I suspect that both are so talented at firing weapons that each time someone gets an item, their places will switch. They will constantly switch back and forth throughout the first and second lap, but the third will be different. By this time both will have a true handle on their carts, and know exactly how each item works. The winner will be the one that learns the fastest, and makes use of any advantage given to him.

The Winner

Let’s face it, the Gundams in Gundam Wing were built a lot stronger than the ones in the original. Heero was used to soaking up tons of damage with the Wing, instead of dodging. While Amuro on the other hand had to dodge almost every attack, or else he would die. With that said I believe Amuro will be the winner because of his ability to dodge Heero’s attacks.

Throughout the fight Amuro will learn how to use the items. By the third lap he will be able to attack Heero from first place. How does he do this? By using his Newtype powers to control a shell like a fin funnel. With the right shot he would be able to hit Heero while he is turning and force him to fall from the Rainbow Road, throwing away any hope for victory.

@cfatalis: Come on the WZ has been known to just stand their and let itself be hit many times with no effect. GW has Gundanium, ie. legit plaot armor.
cfatalison June 3, 2010 at 11:27 a.m.
@hitsusatsu11:  yes and that is why their pilot never learn a very important skill for a pilot , mecha dogfighting
00Raiseron June 3, 2010 at 11:32 a.m.
You all are some Wing Haters. Heero would probably trash Amuro. Did I see someone say the gundams of Gundam Wing are made out of paper. LOL right thats why the Deathscythe Hell  took a direct shot from a beam cannon and didnt even flinch. And if Im not mistaken didnt the RX - 0079 get destroyed constantly in the series. Also Heero's skills are more refined. I dont see Amuro last very long in a beam saber fight. Oh and by the way people the Zero system, for those who master it gives the pilot the ability to foresee the that various outcomes, futures, and the steps that are taken to each one of the future. Also gives the pilots a heightened sense of his surroundings. So Heero has a major advantage.

You can easily tell who in this thread is holding a teenage-years nostalgia-glazed candle for their Toonami years.

hitsusatsu11on June 3, 2010 at 11:53 a.m.
@MercuryCrusader: Ever the elitist once again eh? Lol jk. I never had Toonami where I live. It's just UC is more like realistic warfare and in GW they are one man armies. Amuro in real life would be an elite ace, Heero in real life simply couldn't exist. What he does is not possible.
MercuryCrusaderon June 3, 2010 at 12:03 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11: If I don't play Devil's Advocate, who will?  Haha. This also means I have to act like a jerk when I can.
Besides, we all know what would happen if UC Gundam and Gundam Wing stuff actually crossed over. They'd team up with the likes of Mazinger Z, Daitarn 3, and Gunbuster.  Also, I'm pretending Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 is canon, so that also means Shinji Ikari mans up thanks to the encouragement of hot-blooded super robot pilots, even if Asuka fights with Kouji because they're both too hot-blooded for their own good.
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 3, 2010 at 12:04 p.m.
@cfatalis: The reason why is because they would break the games. There would be no way to balance the game.
cfatalison June 3, 2010 at 12:14 p.m.
@MercuryCrusader: psssh, SRW Shinji is a MAN OF DESTINY, Eva-01 = gamebreaker
speak that to the likes of turn A, sentinel in DS G-Gen, Eva-01 of alpha SRW, and of course gaogaigar and shin getter
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 3, 2010 at 12:15 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11: However it that really Heero's doing. Is Heero the one that can't exist or is it his MS that can't exist? If Amuro and Heero both were in WZs who would win? I say Amuro would probably win. Sure Heero Yuy with all of the MS training in the world could pilot pretty much any MS he gets in. However Amuro with no MS training could basically with no training and only instinct and win a fight. That's before he became a Newtype and had copious amounts of MS experience.  So they would probably almost be on the same skill level with a new suit and then you have to factor Amuro's new type abilities combined with the Zero System.
Ragnorakon June 3, 2010 at 12:15 p.m.
I think Amuro would win purely on the fact that his newtype abilities would trump Heero, and I really really don't like Heero, winey death seeker that he is
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 3, 2010 at 12:19 p.m.
@cfatalis: Yes but with the Wing gundams w are talking about what 8 to 9 super powerful ultra-durable Gundams.from one series.
MercuryCrusaderon June 3, 2010 at 12:22 p.m.
@cfatalis:  Actually Ideon was the gamebreaker once you figured out how to abuse the Ide gauge and just map-spammed the Ideon Gun.  Seriously, between Ideon, Gunbuster, the three EVA units, Genesic Gaogaigar, Mazinkaiser, and Shin Getter Robo, SRW Alpha 3 was hella broken. Also, I pity anyone who was fool enough to get EVA-01 shot down...
Now that you kinda brought up MEN OF DESTINY, the GP-03 Dendrobium is the most fun Gundam.
cfatalison June 3, 2010 at 12:26 p.m.
@MercuryCrusader: Zeorymer and it's upgrade, safer than ideon , no?
yes GP03 the gundam whose stat rivals that of a super robot, but WAY faster
GodLen staff on June 3, 2010 at 1:35 p.m.
@MercuryCrusader: you are making me want to play it again! They need to make more SRW with Gunbuster in it.
hitsusatsu11on June 3, 2010 at 2:10 p.m.
@MercuryCrusader: Shinji mans up enough in Rebuild anyway.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: Even in equal suits I think Heero wins. Amuro seems to have realistic war skills, Heero's skills seem super human.
Ryuku_Ryosakeon June 3, 2010 at 3:03 p.m.
@hitsusatsu11: What don't you get about psychic effing powers. Amuro is the poster boy for super human mech pilot. He is literally the next stage of human evolution. That makes him super human. Heero is just a guy with excellent military training with whatever mastering the Zero system requires. All the other characters in Wing are on the level of Heero it's just they don't have WZ. There is only one Amuro. The prefect combination of psychic abilities with real world military experience and instinct.
HeeroYuyon June 3, 2010 at 7:10 p.m.
Ok, I can't sit here listening to this any longer, I have to correct some of this:
FIRST MAJOR ASSUMPTION/MISTAKE ALL OF YOU ARE MAKING: Find me a clip where Wing Zero is sitting there taking hits like mad without any damage to show as a result WHEN HEERO WAS PILOTING IT. When Quatre first showed up with it and destroyed the OZ resource satellite in one blast for the mobile suit's debut, yeah, it was eating the hits like no other, but when Heero got his hands on it, all of a sudden it's dodging shots all over the place like it should since it has VERNIERS LARGER THAN ITS LEGS. Wing Gundam is, I'll admit, more "stormtrooper effect"-lucky rather than proficient at dodging, but you really can't say the same about Wing Zero if you ACTUALLY look at the footage.
SECOND FACTOR THE MAJORITY OF YOU SEEM TO BE FORGETTING CONVENIENTLY: We're talking about a kid who has been trained in mobile suits since before he was old enough for middle school. If Takumi could learn to drift his 86' better than virtually everyone else 10 years older than him save for a few kids with a natural knack for it and he only started in middle school, imagine the natural proficiency of a kid who basically goes through a Gundam equivalent of the SPARTAN-II program, and was using a stinger since age 10!
We're comparing him to a engineering high school kid who only read the manual to pilot the Gundam, and just like Heero, had a (comparatively speaking) insanely overpowered suit to protect him. The difference is Heero knew how to use his effectively before jumping into combat, whereas Amuro was saved by a mix of button-mashing/luck and something that amounted to supernatural ESP.
BACK TO THE DEBATE AT HAND:In a mario cart match, Heero might read up and practice like a Japanese gamer would, but I think that'd mostly be balanced out by Amuro's aforementioned ESP Newtype capabilities. Therefore, I really think it'd be pretty dependent on other factors, or rather, it'd be so close it's rather pointless to argue a match such as this.
As far as gaming metaphors are concerned:
Heero = hardcore Japanese tourney gamer
Amuro = an RTS AI that only pretends to have fog of war enabled for itself but really counters your moves in advance through gameshark codes.
sotyfan16on June 3, 2010 at 7:11 p.m.

Heero all the way. He is a crazy, albeit slightly suicidal, badass.

kira112on June 3, 2010 at 7:12 p.m.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: exactly cause heero is not anewtype just a highly trained soldier who can use WZ well hehad trouble at first controling it amuro would win he did stop char withhis nu gundam wile fighting of meteroes could heero do that:O?
hitsusatsu11on June 3, 2010 at 7:15 p.m.
@Ryuku_Ryosake: Talk about superhuman? Heero bent steel bars with his bar hands on separate occasions.

Dig Deeper into Heero Yuy

Arguably the main character of Gundam Wing, he is one of the original five Gundam pilots and pilots the Wing Gundam and Wing Gundam Zero. Despite his young age, he is a trained professional with little emotion and extensive knowledge and piloting experience.
