Bandai Licenses K-On! Anime For U.S. Distribution

First series of the popular anime adaptation coming, but details scant.

(Many thanks to Count_Zero for shooting news of this Bandai press release our way! I don't know what's going on in your profile pic, but I still like your name.)

Anime Expo 2010 yielded the first in what will hopefully be a fruitful harvest of industry news yesterday with the announcement at Bandai Entertainment's panel that the anime adaptation of K-On! will finally be making its way to American shores. Unfortunately, the company wasn't much more forthcoming with details such as who the voice cast will consist of or whether or not there are any talks for licensing K-On! season two, which is still airing in Japan. (Season two has two exclamation marks, actually. Get it? Season two?)  They have, however, confirmed via Twitter that the series will be available on both Blu-Ray and DVD (thanks metalsnakezero!).

K-On! started as a four-panel comic in publisher Houbunsha's monthly seinen anthology Manga Time Kirara in 2007. If four-panels seems like a tiny amount of space to build a manga from--let alone a title that's become as spectacularly successful as K-On!--remember that such powerhouses as Azumanga Daioh and Sazae-San are also both four-panel affairs. The comic follows the story of four high school girls who form a band, Ho-kago Tea Time, and their travails as they learn to perform and juggle school pressures. Only time will tell if this simple premise and the show's adorable moe art style will cause the stampede of popularity here as it did in Japan.

For the record, in my profile pic, I am eating an Ice Planet while waiting in line for an advance screening of Serenity (on Joss Whedon's birthday to be specific).

Man, that is a weird picture. Count_Zero

Anyway Bandai has confirmed that it'll be on DVD and Blu ray so I super hype for a HD K-on at my house :D

It's time for K-On to take over America now.

Made me giggle to see Azumanga-Daioh and Sazae-san in the same sentence.

Oh god. I think I'm going to have to buy this.

I'm kinda surprised it wasn't licensed earlier but I know it was a licensing nightmare.  I like K-On! and will be buying it but its not the best thing I have ever seen.

I can't help but wonder if  gets dubbed, will the Voice Actresses sing the songs too or will they get singers to do it instead?

I honestly cannot imagine right now, what the characters will sound like in English... really I'm at a loss.. or the songs for that matter..

Oh god no, I didn't think about the songs until now, K-On! characters speaking English would be bad enough, but SINGING!? NO! NONONO! NOOOOOO!

So this is what a double edge sword feels like.  I am over joyed that I will be geting my HD version of K-On I have low expectations for an english dub.  I could insert a rant right here but I don't want to waste anyones time.

No matter how horrible you can imagine K-On sung in English.. it will never come close to the atrocity that was the original dubbed Bubblegum Crisis songs.
