Bakemonogatari Prequel Anime Is Greenlighted

Let the -onogatari word play continue!

Japanese light novel author NisiOisiN is a man who likes his word play. A lot. Not only is his pen name an English palindrome, the titles of his works are, so far, all portmanteaus: his breakthrough success, 2006's light novel Bakemonogatari, is a combination of bakemono ("monster") and monogatari ("story"). If you liked that title's slightly naughty (I guess we call it "fan service") anime adaptation then you'll want to know that the rumored second anime follow-up to that series, Kizumonogatari, has just been greenlighted.

ANN is reporting that the announcement came via an inserted card included with copies of the just-released Nekomonogatari novel. The project is being overseen by Kodansha and NisiOishiN with production by Aniplex and all the actual hard work done by SHAFT, Inc. Kizumonogatari's story is a prequel to the first series and will apparently focus more on Shinobu Oshino, the blond-haired vampire who appears to be a young girl, but is actually a formerly fearsome 500-year-old nightstalker. By the way, a "kizumono" in Japanese spoiled or damaged goods, which seems a perfect description for Shinobu.

I heard good thinks about the prequel and hopefully SHAFT will have the right amount of human power to finish a episode on time.

Wait, shouldn't it be "Green-lit"?!

Greenlighted somehow, doesn't sound right...

Consider me hopping onto the bandwagon for this. Hopefully...

Can't open your Spoiler Warning.

Bakemonogatari was a strange series for me but entertaining in it's own right. What's the second season then if Kizumonogatari is the third installment?
Boddingtonon July 28, 2010 at 5:30 p.m.
@sotyfan16: My mistake, it's the second in that series, but the prequel. The third NisiOisiN work that's getting an anime, though, is Katanagatari. I'm entirely unfamiliar with what that title's about and how it relates to any of this.
metalsnakezeroon July 28, 2010 at 5:39 p.m.
@Boddington:  Katanagatari is completely different from Bakemonogatari. Its a tale of 2 people who are looking for 12 powerful swords in order to prevent them from falling to the hands of evil! It has the same amount of meta humor and climax moments as other NisiOisiN works but make makes this series interesting is that each episode is a hour long and is shown ever month instead of every week, allowing for more build up in each episode and the endurance of waiting to see what happens for the viewers.

@Boddington:
Ah ok, I thought I missed something. This all seems very intresting just with possibly having the same animation style as Bakemonogatari.

Great news I'll be checking it outXD

Hopefully this prequel will have some badass/bloody fights like the bakemonogatari 1st episode preview showed...
Any news on the format? I'm betting a series of 4 or 5 OVA's :)
metalsnakezeroon July 29, 2010 at 9:03 a.m.
@shels:  I assume it'll be a OVA length since the novel was only 18 chapters long compare to  Bakemongatari which was 41 chapters long.

So what is Kizumonogatari supposed to stand for?

Bakemonogatari is on my list of anime to watch, but have not started it yet because I'm going through Evangelion and following a few of the summer anime at the moment, but I've heard good things and can't wait to get around to it!

Hell yeah! I hope they do Nisemonogatari as well!
