AV MOD MATERIAL: Quick Picks -- 5/6/13

Lots of new anime and manga to choose from. This week we pick killer bunnies, crazy zombies and naked amnesia. What will you pick?

TAKASCHICHEA'S PICK:

"It gives me a Gosick vibe"
"It gives me a Gosick vibe"

My Quick Pick would be Doubt. I saw DocHaus and a few editors on this manga wiki page. I was curious why they liked this manga series. The cover art of the rabbits reminds me of Shiro of Deadman Wonderland - who I keep referring to my White Rabbit from Egypt Central's White Rabbit song. Upon reading the plot, it gives me a Gosick vibe where children are forced to play a deadly game for corrupted officials.

Rabbit Doubt-a mobile phone game-has taken Japan by storm. In it, players are rabbits who must uncover the wolf in rabbit's clothing before falling prey to its mistrust-sowing wiles...as well as its teeth. When a group of teen players decides to meet offline for fun, the last thing they expect is to lose consciousness and wake up trapped in an abandoned building, mysterious bar codes tattooed on their bodies, and a corpse strung up in front of them. To stay alive and find a way out, they have but one option-to sniff out the lying wolf in their midst. Will these virtual acquaintances be able to pull it together in the real world and figure out what's going on in time to avoid ending up as the wolf's dinner?

BIGHEART711'S PICK:

"Things are already bananas"
"Things are already bananas"

My pick for this time is "Is This a Zombie!?" because I just started out with reading it. So far, things are already bananas with Ayumu and the direction of where it's going is pretty entertaining, especially with him as a magus/magical guy. Yen Press just released their translation for vol. 4, so hopefully more craziness ensues.

After Eu disappears, Sera is down in the dumps and, thanks to bad seed Kyouko, Haruna transforms into a meowing machine! But damn it all, undead Ayumu's undying wish is just to see Eu!!

SORA_THEKEY'S PICK:

"This naked amnesia episode that has something to do with a terrorist attack"
"This naked amnesia episode that has something to do with a terrorist attack"

This week I wanted to choose an anime that I have not seen but want to, badly. Honestly, I don't understand the plot of Eden of the East but the animation is so appealing that it might just be enough for me to see the pretty pictures. The plot revolves around Akira who has this naked amnesia episode that has something to do with a terrorist attack. Anyways, like I said, the only reason I'm picking this is because of the animation. Anyone wanna tell me if this is good or not?

Akira Takizawa wakes up naked outside the White House with no memories. He’s got a gun in one hand, a cell phone in the other, and doesn’t know if he’s a good guy or one of the worst. He doesn’t remember the phone gives him instant access to ten billion yen and a woman who can make his most outlandish requests a reality. He doesn’t recall his connection to the ongoing missile attacks terrorizing the Japanese people. Or the part he played in the sudden disappearance of 20,000 shut-ins. He doesn’t even remember he’s supposed to save Japan and will be murdered if he fails. Whatever it is he’s tangled up in, Takizawa’s definitely in deep – and that’s not even scratching the surface.

For some reason, people seem to really like watching children play deadly games for corrupt officials.

Ya its odd is it not? People also think of children as symbol for innocense.Probly the theme is well worn cause its innocense doing evil for those who are corrupt. Not sure i see the draw but we see it in black laggon an gunslinger girl .Im sure their is older use of the theme but those just spring to mind.

Just realized that there's a Hunger Games relation...

Hmm.. well the Eden of the East plot gets kind of complicated so I don't really blame that plot summary for being really bad. But the anime is really really good, so it's a good choice.

Hmm well, here's my attempt at a plot summary: You are given $100 million dollars to change the world. The phone connects you to a special operator whom you can order to do ANYTHING you want with the money. But you have amnesia and have no idea how you got the phone.

That should be enough of a tease, me trying to explain the other parts of the plot would probably just muddy the waters more than anything. I still don't completely understand the plot myself, but it's a great ride watching the plot and suspense unfold on its own.

I had a Hunger Game vibe from it as well. Come to think of it, Btooom is the adult version of it.

Oh, Eden of East, why don't I call up He's a wiki editor and a big fan of the series.

Doubt is pretty good, more like the movie Saw than Gosick though in terms of plot.

Eden of the East was fun, but the ending movies made me retroactively hate that series.

PS: Buy the Bloody Monday manga so we can get all three "seasons" officially translated. Do it. Now.

Waleson May 20, 2013 at 8:04 a.m.

Eden of the East was a fun, but short, series about what money can really provide and do in this world. The first movie was great but DocHaus has it to a tee: they in the end, were a bit of a let down. Still, its worthy of a recommendation in my book.

@Wales:

I'll try it soon as I can.
