The clash of power in this chapter was something to behold. As I think about it, this is Luffy's first real match up with another Haki user since being taught these skills himself. We've seen Don Chin Jao use Conqueror's Haki and now Armament Hardending. I'm once again amused how Oda has handled this shonen tournament. Preliminaries are normally one offs where the main character eases through, but Luffy's facing a real stiff challenge.
While we're on the topic of power. I think for the first time in the series I've seen a devil fruit power that honestly creeped me the heck out. If you forgive the pun, it really made my skin crawl. Kelly Funk literally becomes a living jacket that can then be worn by another person to take control. Oda has gone some really wild places with these powers, but even this is stretching it -- you don't need to forgive that pun.
The whole bit with Jean Ango testing Luffy's identity really didn't go anywhere. Rather than Luffy taking him out, it was Don Chin Jao. I did still get a chuckle at Jean's reaction when he realizes where all those weapons he threw landed.
If you were wanting some real down-and-dirty shonen brawling in this tournament, then look no further. It also doesn't hurt that we get some good laughs. The surprise of this chapter is that it doesn't appear Luffy will claim an easy win out of this preliminary. I look forward to seeing where this goes next week for Straw Hat.
