AV MOD MATERIAL: ONE PIECE Ch. 698 Review

The Punk Hazard Arc is finally concluding, but what is the next adventure for this new born alliance?

Trafagar Law makes for natural captain material.

Trafalgar Law explains the plan to the Straw Hats, and Smoker faces the blind rage of a warlord on Punk Hazard.

The Good

Doflaingo, that chill down your spin isn't the weather.
Doflaingo, that chill down your spin isn't the weather.

We're in transition between arcs as Punk Hazard is closing. Shockingly enough, I thought the merry band of pirates would set sail straight for Kaido, but they first have business on Dressrosa, Doflamingo's home base. That has some exciting possibilities seeing how the flamboyant warlord is a fair bit cross withTrafalgar Law, and his crew is there and waiting. It's been a long time since the crew has headed anywhere with an intention of conflict. They normally stumble into it. This could very well lead into theNew World edition of the Baroque Works Saga.

Ever since Doflamingo was revealed, the source of his power to control has been highly suggested, but it's never been so graphically depicted until now. This marks the first time that Oda has ever revealed the strings he uses to control and slice. On top of that, the crime boss is shown to be a haki user. However, I don't think he's strong enough -- or foolish enough -- to think he can match the power of Kuzan.

The Bad

Man, Smoker has just gotten beaten up this entire arc. Loses heart to Law, defeated by Caesar Clown, beaten to a pulp by Vergo, and finally sliced up by Doflamingo. While I'm talking about one of my favorite Marine commanders. His conversation with Doflamingo is confusing. He addresses the warlord as his secret name, Joker; but then acts as if he doesn't know about Vergo being a traitor. It's a peculiar mixed message.

Verdict 4/5

It was a great chapter, but it felt that some of the best parts were cut short. Don't get me wrong. I got some great laughs, and that reveal at the end was incredible. I'm left wondering, how did Kuzan know to even head for Punk Hazard to begin with? Did someone tip him off? There wont be a ONE PIECE review for next week since the series is on break. In that time, what choice do you think Doflamingo will make? Will he back down or risk a battle with the powerful former admiral?

This is blasphemy. Smoker deserves better treatment than that.

I believe Smoker was being a smart a** to Doflamingo

CC crack me up, hope he stay with the crew a little longer

I do love the in between Arc of One Piece, it always have great moments and learn a little more about the world.

I do love the (somewhat) soft rage of Doflamingo

I see Oda make a mistake on page 74 (wonder if I can send him a SBS about it LOL!)

I have a feeling that Traffy (going to call him that for now on) is rethinking about the alliance with the Straw Hats

Digging Franky's new hair style

I knew that was going to be Kuzan :)

This.
Smoker is just trying to piss Doflamingo off. He called him Joker to show that he knew everything but then pretended he had no idea about Vergo to annoy him. He's basically distracting Dofla from the rest of G5 and the Strawhats by riling him up and taking the beating.

I know a lot of people had a problem with Smoker getting destroyed again and again this arc but I think it fleshed out his character a bit more. He's willing to get the crap kicked out of himself for the greater good.
