AV MOD MATERIAL: ONE PIECE 695 Review

The scaredy-cats of the Straw Hats step up to the plate in this Pirate Alliance.

And they mean it!!
And they mean it!!

Baby 5 and Buffalo's attempt to try and run off with Caesar's lame body is thwarted by an unlikely pair of fighters.

The Good

This could only be better if Tashigi and Monet were in this shot.
This could only be better if Tashigi and Monet were in this shot.

There was little in this week's chapter that wasn't great. Franky not only reveals yet another powerful attack of the General Franky but finally notices Caesar is their goal.

Though Usopp and Nami are never really ones who look to fight, They both have their strengths in combat, and they aren't shy about admitting that. It was great seeing the pair of them use their abilities to finally knock out Buffalo, Baby 5, and Caesar. Not only was the art great, but they had me laughing throughout.

Things aren't quite over just yet. We're still left with a cliffhanger of a shadowy figure standing on the water and heading for Punk Hazard. I don't remember Doflamingo saying he was sending anyone else. Is this a partner of Law, or is this lazy mystery man possibly Kuzan?

The Bad

Here's a tiny detail that I don't quite get. If Caesar is suppose to be paralyzed, how can he suddenly fly on his own will? I'm sure there are a 1,001 reasons you could come up with. It's just kind of strange. Though, I can forgive anything as long as they also gag Caesar now that he's captured.

Review 5/5

Is this mystery man Kuzan or - ?
Is this mystery man Kuzan or - ?

An excellent mixture of action and comedy in ONE PIECE this week. I think Oda has shown a pretty good balance in this arc, and I was happy to see Nami get in on some of the action. You just have to wonder how this will all end. Doflamingo is on his way, and so is another party. I don't think they'll be leaving soon. Chopper will surely cure all the infected on the island, and hopefully save Monet. Plenty of time for another battle to break out.

What's the obsession with Monet?
She's obviously on Doflamingo's side, I don't understand why people like her so much.
Destinyheroknighton Jan. 23, 2013 at 5:14 p.m.

And this is one of the reasons I like One Piece, all the characters get there moment to shine

I wondering if Usopp's Black Kabuto is a Zanpakuto now :)

Well it not surprising that CC is still moving (and breathing), Spandam was able to move after he got crush by his pet elephant. But it don't bug me, since I love to see those guys get there butts kick

I notice in one of the panels, that the stick isn't in Monet's heart anymore

I 100% sure that is Kuzan, riding a seagull or some kind of bird

Anyway, I can't wait until next week to see what happens

@Petiew: People can change. Besides, after failing Doflamingo, I doubt that bastard would've kept her alive even if Caesar didn't stab her in the heart already.

That and she's a harpy with snow powers. That's usually part of the formula for an awesome character in the making in One Piece.

And I still say Law could just replace her heart with someone else's. Then we don't have to worry about her siding w/ Doflamingo anymore. Besides, he's a jackass who preaches about dreams being worthless and nonexistent and wants to make the world follow this entire mentality. Considering how dreams are a major theme in One Piece, Monet needs to have a DAMN GOOD reason to want to follow someone like that. Because chances are good that if Doflamingo wasn't as strong as he was, he would've suffered death by overkill from preaching that considering even Blackbeard of all people had that big speech about how the dreams of pirates will never end.

In fact, I'm calling it now: Doflamingo gets an ass beating even worse than the one Crocodile got by the time he and Luffy square off. If not in this arc, than next time they meet. Because Luffy is not gonna take his "the era in which dreams no longer exist" BS.

I don't see what the obsession with monet is either.(shrugs)meh. she s a nice looking character and all. seems like a bit of mystery is left about her but still meh. I thought forsure she was a double agent or maybe i should say triple. (CC,DOFLAMINGO,LAW)

@Petiew:

I'm fascinated with Monet becasue she's strong, mysterious, and so little is known about her. She passed the note onto Chopper to give him what he needed to help the kids, and it must have been her who made sure Law was shackled with regular chains. It obviously wasn't Caesar or Vergo. She's the only one left. She also told Luffy that she will be erased by Joker if she doesn't protect Caesar. Oda has planted too many seeds about her character to just leave it unexplained.

@Destinyheroknight:

I went back and checked. You're right about her heart.

Petiewon Jan. 24, 2013 at 9:39 a.m.
@FoxxFireArt: @LordTerminal: Was it ever explicitly shown that Monet was the one who chucked Chopper the paper? I always assumed Law had set it up so the chains would be normal, and he used his room ability to throw the paper to Chopper.
I remember there being a panel of Monet noticing Chopper, but that's all.
I could be wrong, but the connection seems tenuous at best.

Monet is also explicitly shown to be kind of evil. She encourages and tricks the kids into eating the candy. She also seems very loyal to Doflamingo, she was willing to die for him before he had even suggested the plan to her. Monet is less of an expendable pawn than someone like Bellamy and DF seems to have at least a little compassion towards her. The line where she says she wants to make DF Pirate King kind of solidifies she is loyal to him.
I think there's more evidence for her being evil than the popular theory that she was being forced into it.
If you contrast her with Robin from the Alabasta saga you can see how different the situation is. I'd say the biggest difference is Monet was clearly doing bad things. Robin betrayed Crocodile because she didnt want him to obtain the ancient weapon, while Monet was willing to kill herself, and everyone else for Doflamingo's ambition.

Edited to say I do quite like her design and power though.

@Petiew:

Monet obviously noticed Chopper running off and didn't say anything. At the time, Law didn't have the information on how to help the kids. That's why he brought Chopper along.

When Law was being chained up, he was also being locked up with several other people at the very same time. He was incapacitated by Vergo. It doesn't seem likely that he could control that he would be the only one not locked up with sea stone.

About her words to Doflamingo. Those could have just been words to him to make him think she's loyal to him. I could also point to her talking to Luffy and telling him that if she didn't protect Caesar. Joker would erase her. Oda wouldn't raise so many questions and leave them up in the air. Vergo is easy to bring back. You just need someone to put his pieces back together. Monet needs someone to put her heart back. Law seems to be the only one who can undo his power. Oda doesn't kill off named characters easily.

Petiewon Jan. 24, 2013 at 4:37 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: The whole argument kind of falls apart though when Monet was willing to kill herself for Doflamingo. She wasn't being forced, she had made her way over there before Doflamingo ever brought it up. The part about only following Doflamingo's orders so she wouldn't be killed falls apart when she was about to willingly kill herself for his ambition.

The monet is good theory is flawed in that you have to disregard all of the solid, explicitly stated evidence we've seen so far, and replace it with shaky theories.
The chains are actually explained by law in 677 (Can't edit the picture for some reason). The only discrepancy is the note that is thrown
to Chopper. Chopper not knowing who threw it at him, and the single shot of Monet. But the note only tells Chopper not to act now and try to free them. Monet would have to be aware of Law's plan and be working with him, which doesn't seem likely based on the way Law acted towards her. He attempted to draw her out so Chopper could get in, and wasn't aware she had been tracking him previously.

I don't think Vergo or Monet are dead, I'd wager that depending on the outcome of this arc one of them might get their own cover story.

@Petiew:

But was she really willing to kill herself "for him" or to be free of him. None of this still explains what she said to Luffy.

Petiewon Jan. 24, 2013 at 5:12 p.m.
@FoxxFireArt: It's not ever implied she wants to free herself though. She shows she's willing to die for his ambition, and she says he'll become the Pirate King. If she hated him so much would she say such a thing in her dying breath?
If you look at the solid evidence we've been given Monet's alligence is clear. It's never been implied Monet wishes to free herself, unless what she said to Luffy was explicit. I can't remember what was said.
Monet probably fears Doflamingo, but from her actions it looks as if she respects him and would kill herself to make sure he met his ambition. It's kind of like an alternate take on Luffy/Zoro at Thriller Bark.
