Madara's little story time corner in this edition of NARUTO was not something I was expecting. In this tale, Marada doesn't so much give a genesis of the world, but tells us the legend of the origin of both chakra and the Ten Tails. Knowing a touch about Japanese folklore myself. I notice this is a sort of melding of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, also known as Princess Kaguya; the biblical story of the forbidden fruit, and the legend of Pandora's Box. Unlike Eden, this was a war tore world. Kaguya'sattempt to tame it not only ended up creating more violent wars in the future but unleashed the Ten Tails onto the world. The moral of the story could be that even the best intentions can have terrible outcomes.
Though, before we take this as literal gospel. Remember who the messenger is. This was all written on a tablet that was possibly written by the Uchiha Clan Ancestor, one of the two sons of the Sage of Six Paths. What about the perspective of the Senju Clan Ancestor? Perhaps this is all we're going to hear of this. However, I feel as if there's something missing. This could be a clue to the next -- and possibly final -- arc, but I could also be speculating wildly.
Part of me wants to criticize Kishimoto for choosing this point of the story to give us this ancient story, but what would have been a better moment to explain the Ten Tails was originally a... tree? It's the pacing of this arc that continually frustrates me. Drama does been need time to built and simmer, but it's the repeated cycle of Naruto powering up only to be de-powered that's starting to wear on me. For months we've endured two chapters of exposition and one chapter of action. This war has been going on since Volume 55, and it's looking to stretch beyond Volume 67.
I appreciate that the Ten Tails isn't just some version of evil incarnate that exists to cause trouble for humanity. It's a monster that's out to reclaim what it feels was stolen. This was a good chapter, and it did pass on some rather interesting information. It's unfortunate that this is coming at a point where I just want this arc to be over with. The action scenes we did get and Hiruzen's reappearance are what saved things for me this week.
