AV MOD MATERIAL: NARUTO Ch. 634 Review

Now, I don't want to be getting ahead of myself, but could this arc finally be ending?

With the Trio-Summoning completed, the revived Team 7 makes preparation to finally end this war.

The Good

Why does Sakura get the hand-me-down summons?
Why does Sakura get the hand-me-down summons?

I know that this is still technically the "Ten-Tails Revival Arc", but the change over from the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc was so seamless as to be nonexistent. This war started over two years ago. It's been going on for far too long, Finally, we're starting to see some glimmer on the horizon that the story can start to move on. At least I hope that's what it is.

The biggest highlight of the week is the art work on these pages. It isn't even a contest. Each panel has great detail. You can really see that Kishimoto must have really put his all into this one. That needs to be appreciated more. Especially when you consider the tight timeline manga artists must be on for weekly series.

The Bad

The whole scene of Naruto and Sasuke combining attacks seems to be designed to inspire cheers, but it felt incredibly corny. Everything is well drawn, but just think about this. Naruto and Sasuke haven't been together for more than a few minutes at a time since the two year time skip. Yet somehow they're able to anticipate and perfectly combine their attacks with zero communication. Seriously?

Sakura also fell back into her usual pattern this week. She basically gets one chapter to steal the spotlight, then she stands behind the boys. Sure, she's doing a very important task in helping heal the wounds of the Shinobi Alliance. It just sort of destroys her admirable resolve to standing with them in the fight. Why spend the energy healing the scratches of those who aren't going to be involved in finishing this battle? She's not the only medical ninja on the battlefield.

Verdict 3/5

Sasuke's presence in this chapter set aside, this was a mostly enjoyable edition to read. It was certainly visually appealing on all counts, but the events got way too Kumbaya for my liking. I just couldn't get over the awkwardness of the combining attacks moment. Why is it that it's Naruto's technique that's boosting Sasuke's instead of the other way around? Who's the real protagonist of this series anyway?

I liked the Naruto/Sasuke Combo Attack. It showed just how well they work together, that even without communication, they know what the other is about to do. It reminds me of when they fought Zabuza. They worked perfectly with the Shadow Clone/Shadow Shuriken move and barely had to speak to one another.

I personally loved this chapter, easily a 4.

There's been this subtle ability to communicate this way since the very beginning of the series. Of course it didn't immediately start out that way. Before squad 7 was squad 7, none of them considered teamwork. But since the Land of Waves, Sasuke and Naruto have managed to occasionally strategize when they're on the same page about something (i.e: Sasuke throwing Naruto disguised as a shuriken at Zabuza to free Kakashi). But not all the time it happened because either Naruto would be out of the same page or there would be some disagreement between them (i.e: whether to give Orochimaru the scroll at the Forest of Death).

In the case of this chapter though, they just happened to use the right attacks against the 10-tails. Plus, Naruto was aware of how his wind nature techniques can support Sasuke's fire nature techniques. So of course the attacks were combined well. Naruto simply took advantage of his and Sasuke's nature elements.

Sorry to say but I doubt Sakura will get to be heroic again...I don't think Japan has advanced that much in how it treats its women. I was just happy she got a chapter. *sigh* her summon made me groan.
